I’m having a really rough time finding dresses in the perfect color!
We’re having a winter wedding and I want the palette to be blue-gray-white. This is easy enough to mix the colors harmoniously with flower and decorations, but the one sticking point has been bridesmaid dresses. I would love for the bridesmaids to be wearing short, knee-length chiffon dresses in a soft blue-gray, but it’s been really hard to find.
The color options for most dresses that I find are either too blue or too gray, or they’re light sky blue or silver, but not the in between slate shade that I really want! Since the color itself is hard to describe, I’ve attached a picture of what in my mind, is the absolute perfect color. When I saw this dress I thought THAT’S IT!! Now what color is that?! hahaha. (helps that I absolutely love this gown. The skirt actually kind of looks like my wedding gown!)
After months of searching, I realized I was probably being too picky and am now expanding my standards to basically any pretty shade of muted blue. Has anyone encountered dresses in that color family?
So what I’m basically looking for now are:
- Muted blue (or if possible, blue-gray!)
- Soft and flowy material (typically chiffon, just not stiff and straight material)
- BONUS but not necessary – vintage looking would be awesome
- BONUS – under $200 would be even more awesome because my bridesmaids are making me feel guilty about price! haha.
I realize this may be too tall an order, but I figure the people on these boards would know more about bridesmaid dresses than anyone else! 🙂

I get your predicament. I’m also going for a muted, kind of slate blue for my bridesmaid dresses. Have you looked at ModCloth.com? They have a lot of vintage-looking dresses, most of which are under the $200 point. Here are some you might like, though they might also be too casual, depending on your wedding:

now if you ever decide to change from blue to purple… this one is perfect (and it’s mine!). it is definitely purple/grey… looks more purple in the picture than it really is

@kaliella: Aww I’m so glad it’s not just me!! Thanks so much for easing my mind. I wouldn’t have thought it’d be such a difficult color to find. It’s so pretty, it should be more popular! 😉
Trust me, I check Modcloth, Shopruche, Lulus practically every day just in case something perfect comes up, but the styles I love are never in the right color, and the ones in the right color are a style we don’t like, or it’s just too casual. I love the dresses you posted, but since the wedding’s in a big chapel, I think they are too informal. They’d be great for the reception since it’s daytime and in a funky restaurant space, but I worry that they’d look too casual for a chapel.
I actually bought this dress online at Lulus.com in hopes that it would be perfect, but in person my MOH didn’t like it at all and thought it was unflattering and more fitting for a trip to the beach. SIGH!

You may want to take a look at Bill Levkoff’s indigo color. It was too blue for my gray bridesmaids dresses.

Yeah, there’s tons of cute stuff on ModCloth but it tends to be either the wrong color or out of stock (or both!). What about these two in “Cloudy”? I have no idea how much they cost, though.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, ladies! Some great choices! 🙂
FYI this is the front runner for my favorite dress (and the favorite dress of my MOH and Matron of Honor), the Turkish Blue color is close enough to what I was looking for, and we all absolutely LOVE that it’s convertible and can look like 16 other dresses, so I think it has a ton of rewear value.
The only problem is the $250 price tag. I only have four bridesmaids, and they’re all okay with splurging since they know it’s been tough to find the right dress and color… Except for one of them (of course!).
It made me feel really guilty because she complained that it’s way more than she wanted to spend, especially since she also has to fly in for the wedding, although she added “but it’s your wedding sooooo if I have to spend that much, I guess I don’t have a choice. So whatever.” *Sigh* I tried to sell her on the fact that it’s convertible and it’s a versatile color so she can wear it for other special occasions and she just said “I don’t wear dresses much, so it’s really not rewearable for me, it’s just expensive.”
So that made me feel bad, and now I’ve been looking for cheaper alternatives, but without much luck. Maybe it’s a separate question then, how to deal with the one unhappy bridesmaid? :p

@nkatsa: were you able to find a dress in this color under 200$ I am on the same hunt and have found a few dresses in the color (if by the small chance you still need dresses I would be happy to let you iknow the designs and colors)… however, nothing I find is under 200 and I feel bad making my girls spend a lot also 🙂

I’ve also been looking for a similar colour and having a very difficult time finding the right one!
I also really liked Jenny Yoo’s turkish blue! (Though just a warning to other brides, it looks very different in person than what they show on the website!)
Here’s a photo of the swatch (which is still off because it’s a photo – but much more accurate than the website!)
I also came across this blog entry that showcases some beautiful blue dresses:
I checked out the J Crew website and the caspian blue doesn’t look quite as nice on the site (it looks a lot darker). And it’s no cheaper than Jenny Yoo!
@MarieeToBee What colours/designs have you found?

@beb108: The one thing I can say to help is that those look like they are made of a tafetta fabric. It usually has a nice shape and shimmer/glow about it. I know Bari Jay makes really nice tafetta dresses. They also have a irridescent chiffon that is really pretty.

@beb108: If you are still looking for the dress pictured the top one is alfred sung in duponi color quarry – that picture is my inspiration for my wedding colors also and searched till I figured it out 🙂
