I just saw Blue Valentine with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. It’s about the breakdown of a marriage with flashbacks about they they first met. The acting is wonderful, but it is very depressing. I hated the Ryan Gosling character. Has anyone else seen it?

I actually own it. I absolutely love it. I do agree that it is very depressing. I actually have heard that you shouldn’t watch it with a significant other. None the less the acting is raw and fantastic. I would have to say that it is emotionally devastating – but hey, i loved it!

I saw it, and was actually a bit disappointed. I didn’t find either of their characters particularly likeable.

I watched it about a week ago…like a week after me and my husband got married. I loved the movie….he was so not so thrilled it was my choice of movie for the evening (and I totally understand why :-D)! But I thought the acting was amazing, and I couldn’t help but empathyzing with both characters. I actually talked to my ex about it right after hubs and I watched it (he and I have come along way and are friends again) and I told him how much I liked it and it reminded me of the breakdown and history of our relationship. Not that many movies hit such a nerve with me.

I had little empathy for Ryan’s character. Not only was he was a child, but he also just seemed petulant.

Everyone liked this movie, but I just didn’t care about the characters at all. Maybe I need to give it another viewing?

I felt that although neither of the characters were likeable, they were both understandable. On the one hand, you have the man who thinks he has found the woman that he can be himself with forever…one the other side of the coin is the woman who wants/needs a stable relationship. It’s a really heavy movie, and it made me think so much about relationships and the different viewpoints that create them. The differences between men and women are so apparent in this movie, as are the changes that can come about when people have children before they are ready.
Great movie, but made me feel sick after watching it 🙁 These two (M. Williams and R. Gosling) are just too good!!

Ok, so I just watched this again last night. Everyone online was like “Oh I hated Ryan Gosling’s character” but I had more sympathy for his character than Michelle Williams. I was sympathetic to her too, but in a different way.
He really took care of her in the movie, when he was under no obligation to. He supported her decision, he married her, he did the best he was capable of doing, but he just never really changed. She married him as he was, and that was what she ended up with for life while she was evolving into a mother and someone who wanted more out of her career. Their wedding scene was so sad.
