I know when FI and I were looking around for a ring, we were skeptical about buying online. I did a lot of Googling and reading reviews, any information I could get. I just wanted to give my two cents on BlueNile.com in case someone is on the fence about it like I was. We went to several jewelry stores and tried on rings to see what I liked (size of the stone, type of band, etc.). FI wanted to surprise me so I didn’t at the time know he was buying one online. He just wanted an idea of what I liked and he took it from there.
He was a bit worried about buying it sight unseen, but their return policy was worth trying it out and saving money on commission to him. He also had it shipped to an Oregon FedEx so he wouldn’t have to pay sales tax on it (half hour drive from where we live). Just a tip for Bees who live in sales taxed states that are near the non-sales taxed states.
He got me a three stone trellis platinum ring, ~1 carat center, 1.7 tcw, 5.5 ring size. I’ve had the ring for about a month now and I LOVE it. I’m so happy that he bought it online. You save so much money on commission and he put that extra money into the quality of the diamonds and it really shows. When we were in the stores, they didn’t have anything that even compared to the ring he designed for me with Blue Nile. I would HIGHLY recommend Blue Nile to anyone considering it.
Luckily the ring fits and is great quality, so we have not had to deal with customer service, so I can’t speak to that. We have not gotten the ring appraised yet, but I have put the stats into an online “calculator” and it estimates it at about $1.5K more than he paid for it. After I get it appraised I’ll let you know how it compares to what he paid.
I know I read lots of reviews on here for Blue Nile and they were very helpful, so I wanted to do my part for other people who are interested in online buying.
Pictures don’t do it justice, but here are some just so I can show it off some 🙂

@MechEBee: I LOVE that ring! So happy you had a great BN experience! That’s where we would have gotten a stone had we been in the market!!

Thank you for the kind responses. A lot of people don’t like the 3 stones because they are nontraditional. But FI and I have been together for 4 years now and I like that it represents the past, present and future. I also think it looks better on me since I have short stubby fingers. The solitaires with the thin bands just looked like they were trying to strangle my chubby finger. Lol. I love the three stones and the thick band.

@MechEBee: I love three stones! And most of all I love TRELIS settings!!

@MechEBee: My ring is also from Blue Nile. They were wonderful! That trellis setting is absolutely beautiful. FI would have gone with a three-stone for the same reason since we’ve been together for now 7 years (6 when he proposed) but found a beautiful thin micropave he liked much better. Glad you had the same great experience we did!

@MechEBee: Gorgeous!!! I have my grandmother’s wedding set but I would buy from Blue Nile if I ever wanted something else! We got my husband’s wedding band from there.

We got my setting locally, but my diamond is from Blue Nile and we had a great experience with them. Husband called to ask questions a few times and they were super helpful, and the diamond is just exactly what we wanted and he feels like he got a great deal – win win.
