So in case y'all hadn't heard, JCrew is having a 25% off $150 and 30% off $250 sale so I'm trying to settle on BM dresses. Here are the options: either long matching dresses or short dresses that are different for each girl (or she would have an option at least). The charcoal grey color would be an option in the long but not the short.

I'm planning Nov 4, 2011 park ceremony with a formal indoor reception at a historic hall in Charleston after. My colors are black, ivory and blush. I'm trying to convince FH to wear a white dinner jacket and put the groomsmen in tuxes. Have no clue about my dress yet but something formal and fabulous.

Please help with what y'all think will be better! Thanks ladies!

if you're aiming for formal, i would definitely go with long bm dresses. but why not let them choose a long dress? just choose a fabric and color and let them choose the style like you would a short dress. mismatched dresses don't have to be any less formal.

jcrew runs this sale fairly often, so it's not like a now or never. if you can't decide, wait...preferably until you have your own dress. that way you can choose what fabric will be best.

How long does this sale last? cos its seems a bit early to buy BM dresses. Will the sale come back on closer to the wedding?

Also it really depends on which look you prefer, I dont like long dresses so I chose short dresses for my bms but they are all wearing the same dress except from my moh

I've never seen a sale like this from JCrew and I've been shopping there for 7 years. The problem with letting them choose long dresses is they are a lot more expensive than the short ones and there are only a couple of options. The one I picked is the cheapest one at $350 before the sale (so like $245 after).

Plus the other option is to do the same dress and different flowers. I can't decide! I like both options lol.

The short dresses are $175-$225 before the sale so they are a lot more affordable. Does the price make a big difference to anyone? Thoughts?

With the level of formality and time of year you're going for I think long dresses would be best. I just think tuxes and knee length dresses might look off. If the price is the problem then keep looking. I bet you can get BCBG dresses in Jan on sale (actually everything goes majorly on sale in Jan).

I would really be upset to spend over $200 on a BM dress, honestly.  Especially a long one since there aren't a ton of places to re-wear it.  I wouldn't want to spend much over $150 or so for any dress as a BM or MoH since honestly, its hard to wear them again usually.  Although this sale seems good why not wait - I'm sure you could find less expensive dresses that are just as nice if not nicer.

I would go short--they can def wear again, and black dresses are formal enough themselves, as long as they are made from a dressy fabric (no cotton, or chiffon) which they look like they are (I can't tell what material from picture) . I'm from SC too, and think that this would be formal enough for a 6pm or earlier wedding, but not later.

plus as you know it could be 80 degrees November 4 in Charleston, or 60 degrees...haha! never know!

I voted based on your date. November will probably be a little chillier. I'd go with long.

When I think of formal, I don't immediately think of long bridesmaid dresses. IMO you can still have a formal event with short bridesmaid dresses. The black is really classy..and depending on the jewelry chosen, can be really elegant and formal. I really love the second choice in the short section. I just may have to check it out for myself! Good luck!

@lulucarmen: it's the arabelle short dress. one of my bridesmaids looooooves it (the long dress is also the arabelle but long, haha!) which is why i like the long option too. it's such an adorable dress, it does run a little short (i'm 5'10" so it's short on me). hope that helps!

For me as a BM, cost would be an issue, but I really think it depends on what is common in your area/circle. Have you asked your bridal party about what they think is reasonable? I'd been shooting for under $100 for my gals until they told me $150ish is fine, but I know a $200 dress for me would be pushing the limit, especially if I can't wear it again.

That all being said, all of your selections are rather gorgeous dresses, so I'd feel out your BMs and see what they're thinking cost-wise.

I was thinking of your venue and time of year and voted for the long.  I just think your BM could shorten them if they wanted to wear them again.  I know you said  cost is a big issue, maybe find a different brand that is more budget friendly.  Love the black

@Pink Peony:  I am also 5'10" and have a really tough time finding cute cocktail style dresses that aren't extremely short. Yeesh!

My sister has a J. Crew dress that she just loves. It's super cute and really good quality. Hopefully you and your bridesmaids can decide before the discount is up!

The cost would be a huge issue for me, too, but I don't know your  BM's financial situations. I know everyone loves J Crew, but I bet you could find long black dresses much cheaper than that elsewhwere if you're not opposed to it.

$350 is a bit much for BM dresses, but they can definitely shorten the dresses if they want to wear them again. I'm with the PP who suggested waiting a bit to see if you find something just as cute, but won't break the bank.

I just talked to J.Crew and they said the dresses will be returnable. Plus they don't charge your credit card until they ship, which wouldn't be until February. So I think I'm going to just order the long dresses so I have them at the sale price then go from there. At least then there's a backup!

    @Pink Peony:

Just curious - did you run the prices by your bms first?  You may want to if you haven't, before you order.  They are very pretty, btw.

Personally I would not be okay spending $300 on a long black gown (even though its gorgeous). The short is more reasonably priced and you can always wear an LBD. But you know your bridesmaids best...

I like the longer ones better, but that price is a little too steep for me.

If they are in tuxes, I think  your gals should be in gowns.

EDIT: And I agree, they usually do have sales like this

I'd go with short, for pretty much the reasons @southernbride10 said. They're still formal without being stuffy, which is what I find the long dresses. Besides, I'd worry it'd look like a funeral with all that black up front. What are they doing, mourning your singlehood?

AND, lastly, I would be pretty uncomfortable with the price tag for the long dresses. The short ones are more reasonably priced, imo.

note: the dresses would cost $230 per person with the sale price. because i have a jcrew card, i'd put the cost of it on that and i would get rewards gift cards, so i'll take the cost of the git cards off the cost of the dresses to help the girls out. if i can afford to pitch in more i will! i haven't seen a 30% off sale like this before so i think it's a good deal!

@luckyprincess: So we're ordering the long dresses for now since they are more epenive. I'm actually living in China at the moment, so I'm looking into having custom dresses made for the girls here and using the JCrew dresses as a backup. We could even exchange the long dresses for short ones and still get the 30% off the exchange if we decide to do that. It's a win-win. Thanks for all your help ladies!
