So I just realized when reading various posts on Weddingbee that my choice in Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses might be wrong for my wedding.
No purchases have been made, but I have told the girls that they may choose their own black cocktail dress. This was fine when they were wearing high heels, but now the ceremony is on grass so we switched to flats (plus one will be 8 months pregnant!!) Heels are no longer an option, but at a more formal wedding, with all the female family in long dresses, and the guys in tuxes, I am worried that they won’t be "fancy" enough.
The next issue is that if we go with a long dress, it might be harder for them to find something on their own.
My mom has trouble visualizing, so I need some hive advice!!
Thank you in advance ladies! And I will of course let you know what we decide!

You’ve got loads of options! You could keep your maids in heels with cocktail dresses — you’d just need to get these little plastic dealies to put on their heels to keep them from sinking. I hope they work! I’m planning on wearing heels on grass for my own wedding. http://www.soulmatesilk.com/index.html
Long, black dresses aren’t too hard to find, either. JCrew and Nordstrom always have some, though they do lose a bit in re-wearability.
I don’t think flats with cocktail dresses would look bad, either. It could be really cute.

I would try to circle the wagons and get everyone on the same page. If you are unsure, why not ask the girls who will be wearing them? I don’t think you are in bad shape. I agree with bluegreenjean. There are options.
I don’t know about your girls, but I think I would prefer heels, no matter where I was walking. I would never prefer flats. (I’m short and have big feet.) So perhaps everyone could just discuss the possibilities and come up with a solution that works.

Since you are still wanting to do a black dress, you still have lots of options. They can wear a wedge if you don’t think flats are fancy enough, although there are some lovely fancy flats. You could also choose a long dress that all the girls like, and a kind of dress that can be altered into a shorter dress after your wedding. See if your girls can help find you ideas online…Good luck!

Wedges on grass should work splendidly! Also, there are SO many cute flats out there now, I really would not worry about it!
Perhaps put together an email to send to all of your bridesmaids with some suggestions that you’ve found & like…and let them take it from there!

Yes, maybe you can make a few polyvore boards to show them different looks!

Miss Quiche is so right…with the amount of cute flats and wedges out there, this shouldn’t be a problem. Plus it will be much more comfortable for your pregnant friend to stand/walk around in.

Hey ladies- Yes the flat shoes were a must, so we finally decided on long dresses. The girls love it, and are still each picking their own dress. This way we get the perfect blend of comfortable and formal!
