I need some help with BM dresses. I’m a BM and we recieved our dresses in the mail from the bridal shop. Liz Fields Style # 360. Ordered from a shop in Hallandale, FL where the bride lives. The rest of us are scattered around the country with 3 of us together in Alabama.
Us 3 ‘bama girls get our dresses and decide to try them on together when they arrive. Mine and C’s are size 18, N’s is size 22. I wear a street size 12 with large bust. C is a street size 14 with smaller bust than mine, and N is a street size 16.
C’s is tight but with a little alteration it’ll be fine. N’s is huge. She was advised to order a 22 because her hips were her largest measurement. But, the style is pretty flowy through the hips. The top of the dress is huge on her and needs to come in a good 8 inches.
Mine is about 4 inches too small. This makes sense because I do have a larger bust than C while she has larger hips. Since it is flowy through the hips it fits C okand accomodates her smaller bust. But, based on the size chart, I was not expecting mine to be 4 inches too small!
I called the bridal shop and asked them the measurements for a size 18 and 22. I
I measured the dresses and it seems like the bust on the size 18’s is 3 inches smaller than the size chart! I do a lot of sewing so I’m good at measurements but I also went to a good local seamstress and she confirmed the dress was smaller than the size chart.
To make matter worse, the 18 is supposed to be an inch smaller than my bust. I’m not sure why the shop told me I was an 18, particularly after I asked to have room in the bust because I like to have my dresses altered to add support if necessary. I was assured when I purchased that an 18 would give me some room. 18’s fit me in other bridesmaid dresses with a little extra room so this seemed reasonable!
I called the shop back to tell them the dress was smaller than what the size chart says so they asked me to mail it back to confirm. They said they’d contact the designer right away if this is the case.
My dress is now back in Florida and they’re telling me the dress is sized just fine! And that my measurements are wrong. They keep telling me that each size up is two inches bigger and that I just have my measurements wrong.
They won’t allow the bride to come in and see the seamstress measure the dress. They claim its only 1 inch smaller than my measurements but when I put it on its 4 inches too small!
I’m trying to prove to them that the dresses are incorrectly size. Here’s a picture of the dresses folded in half. The sweethear neckline is on the left and the zipper in the back on the right. I’ve matched up the zippers and laid the 18 on top of the 22 and then measured the difference in the empire waist band. When folded in half, the difference is over 3.5 inches. This means the difference between a size 18 and size 22 is 7 inches, NOT 4!!!
I’ve sent these to the bridal shop. They still say nothing is wrong and “because they want me to be happy they’ll let mine out 4 inches”. Not sure where the 4inches is coming from since I was originally told the dress could be let out 2 inches maximum…they refuse to address how two dresses can be 7 inches different when they should be 4.
Please help. My seamstress agrees that there’s something screwy in the sizing. I’m just annoyed to have a $200 dress that needs to be let out so much and potentially screw up the structural integrity of the dress.
