So I'm on the fence about BM dresses - opinions please!

    1) Dessy dress in Melrose print (there are a few styles BMs can pick from.) I would buy each BMs dress for them. I loooove this dress BUT know that my BMs would really never have occasion to wear something like this again.

    2) Give BMs a gift card to J Crew, Banana, Ann Taylor, etc., and let them pick a little black dress. I like the look of the more formal Dessy more but this way I know that they will actually wear the dress again and it would be a great gift to them.

    3) Keep looking until I find an option that is both re-wearable and has the look I'm going for, although I'm honestly not sure if that is 100% possible.

Dessy Melrose print...I will try to post a pic below

That is a really pretty dress.  It's your wedding and your special day.  The last thing I would worry about is whether they can wear it again.  They never do.... And I have been to lots of weddings in my 40 some years.  Make your day special and memorable.

    Good luck

This dress is beautiful... I would say go for that print. Plus depending on their dress style they can defintely wear it again (say shorten it) and make it a cocktail dress.

I would wear it again.... with a cardigan or shall.

    :)

I don't want to sound like a downer but be careful with prints, I think that one is very cute now but not sure if it will hold up 50 years from now...Whereas you can never go wrong with a LBD....just sayin :)

PS- SO nice of you to get your BM's dresses for them, wish I could do that! I'm sure they appreciate it....

Why not give them an option - either a LBD or the print? How many bridesmaids do you have? If you have 4 or more, it would look great if you had 2 and 2, or whatever.

I LOVE the Dessy dress by the way - and I would totally wear it again!

I actually would totally wear that Dessy dress again. It's so pretty. I tend to be a bit bold with my dress selections, though. Why don't you ask your girls if they would prefer black and white patterned dresses or plain black dresses. Also, does that Dessy pattern come in something shorter? That would be perfect.

I say if you are paying then go with the Dessy. I would also totally wear that again, though I would probably have it shortened to cocktail length.

This is tricky, looks like they are neck and neck in the poll, ha ha! My main thought with them not wearing the Dessy again was the length...but as a few helpful bees pointed out, it could always be shortened! I would ask them but they are sweeties and will just tell me to pick whatever I like best.

I just remembered...we tried this one on when we were shopping because I adore the print too. For my girls who aren't busty it was stunning, for the ones that are this dress wasn't the most flattering. Not sure if that's an issue for you!

That Dessy is soo beautiful!  I would go with that one!  If I had a chance of wearing that again, I would.  What do your BMs say?

Thanks, thanks, and thanks again for all of the input! Honestly, I am still totally on the fence. I love that some Bees would wear this dress again but I know my gals are pretty casual ladies and wouldn't take the time to have it shortened. On that hand I love the idea of the look on their faces when they get a nice gift card to Banana and can pick out whatever amazing lil' dress they want. On the other hand, I am rather obsessed with my black and white motif and anything in that theme makes me drool...hmmm...

I've heard of BMs shortening dresses to give it the "re-wearability" factor. I've never had to wear a long dress so I can't say much else about it, except that personally I like the one you chose. Otherwise, maybe choose several dresses that you like and have them choose? That's what we did for the upcoming wedding that I'll be in. It worked and everyone was happy.

Hey, you're paying for them? Definitely get the ones you love!

The print is really pretty, so they may well have ocassion to wear them again, especially if you're letting them choose the style (did I understand that correctly? You seem like an EXTREMELY generous bride to your maids! I'm going to make mine wear matchy matchy all the way haha, and in an obnoxious bridesmaid color too! Okay, maybe... I'm still looking).

If they were paying for the dresses themselves, I'd say little black dress is a great way to go to be kind, but since you're paying, you should get the dresses that you think will look great for your wedding. :) It IS YOUR WEDDING after all!

i just wore a dress like that to a wedding this weekend: in Black Print http://www.express.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=9568&parentCategoryId=2&categoryId=22&subCategoryId=243

Truthfully I would have liked the sweetheart neckline even better after shortening the dress.  So, I say get that printed one!

If you're paying, I think you can do whatever you want, and I would definitely go with the print! I'm actually planning on getting a short dress in that print to wear out.. like.. to rehearsal dinner, or anywhere really, so it's definitely rewearable if I'm planning on wearing it to a non-wedding event! I think print BM dresses are really awesome, and wish they had that print in purple :-)

If you'll let them pick the style, go ahead with the Dessy. I would totally wear that print over and over again as long as it was a shorter style.

I absolutely love that dress! I saw it in a few magazines recently and was tempted to fit it into my wedding theme, though we ultimately decided against the colors.  I think it's an EXCELLENT idea to let your bridesmaids choose different styles of that print!

LBD all the way! I love when the bride tries to give her bridesmaids the leeway to express their own personalities, and I think they probably love it, too. Kudos to you for weighing their feelings so strongly. Bonus - the mismatchy dresses are adorable!

I agree wth Mandyrosy. I like the different dresses. It makes it look a little less like bridal minions/henchmen that way. :)

I have already told my BMs to just get their own LBDs, whatever they want from wherever.  But I did look at this Dessy dress and I am sooooo in love with it.  If it wasn't for the price, I would've gone with it, but I figured it would be better to let them decide their price and let them get what they want.  But if I were the one paying, OMG, it would be that dress for sure!!!!  I would definitely get it shortened and wear it ASAP!!!  Did I mention that I love it???  LOL!  Sheeesh, I may end up just ordering one for myself anyway!!   Laughing

I have attended charity gallas and I would wear that dress to one of them and be very happy. It is your day and you picked a great dress. Go with what you truly want. And good choice buying their dress - I have been forced to buy some awful and expensive dresses in the past that take up closet space ( I can't donate them to the prom program because well lets say I don't take care of the dress through out the night. One has friction burns from sliding across the floor on my knees - lol the bride was upset no one was drinking the wine so I quickly drank all the bottles near by so the next time she looked she was beaming happy that people did like her choice)

    I love the Dessy dress.

And, for my sister's wedding we had Anne Taylor dresses that we "could wear again."  That thing has been in my closet for a year and a half.  Every time I pull it out it out, I'm like, 'ewww, I look like a bridesmaid.' There's nothing wrong with it, but it has a stigma now.

Besides, I think the Dessy dress "can be worn again."

Being an encore bride, I am somewhat more inclined to allow the bridesmaids to pick their own dress.  Mostly a dress they'll wear again.  So, I'm for the LBD.  I am so in love with the Melrose dress, but, it's not recyclable.  You know?  where could they wear it again?  If you pay for the dresses, then, I say pick whatever you want.  However, if they are buying their own dresses, let them pick and be able to get something they like and will wear again.

I also went against the grain and picked the gift card option. I think the dress is pretty, but in photos I think it'll look WAY too busy. Plus, if your girls aren't stick thin, it may not look all that great since it appears to be a very clingy dress. Just my thoughts!

Having been a bridesmaid, I'd totally be (personally) happy with a gift certificate for a LBD.  (I'm a bit biased here though since I've just been cleaning out the closet and gasping at the dresses that are hanging in the closet!)  LOL. :)
