@Paiger8:  5’4″ 110 and starting to look more and more pear shaped as I gain weight. I wear whatever is comfortable and socially appropriate, including maxi dresses. I think they look awful on me but my BF says he loves them and keeps buying them. If YOU think it looks good and you feel comfortable, wear it 🙂 We are often far harsher critics of ourselves than anyone else would be!

I’m your height and also a pear, and I avoid these like the devil! I have a friend who’s my height and has the exact same hip measurement as me, but she carries her weight in her arse rather than out to the sides of her hipbones (if you can visualize it, she looks much narrower-hipped than me from the front), and maxi dresses look GREAT on her. So, it really depends IMO on what kind of pear you are! For me, a defined waist and a shorter skirt flatter my body more.

(But I should add that if you like the style, wear it anyway! Attitude can carry off anything.)

I’m 5’8″ and LOVE maxi dresses! I think they’re usually elegant looking, though I have seen people who are not pregnant, look pregnant in them.  It just depends on your body I guess.

Not all maxi dresses are the same! I’m 5’4 (on a good day) and I like to wear maxi dresses that have more of an empire shape to them. I don’t like to define myself with “body types”, but I’m busty

I’m 5’7″, and a size 16/18 with curvy hips and big thighs. I have one maxi dress that looks fab on me, and the key was where the waistline is. I have a smaller waist so I liked that it emphasized that. Wish I had a picture.

I am also a fan of maxi skirts, which allow me to get waist definition with the top I wear, but also gives me the maxi look I want.

I’m short at 5’4″ but chubby at 145, and I still rock the maxis. Actually I wear all types of dresses, most often I knee length 1940’s style dress, but I find maxis to be the most comfortable. I have to be careful tho that I don’t buy a style that makes me look pregnant, since my tummy is my problem area. I usually wear a body shapper under all my dresses just to smooth out the bumps tho, and that helps.

I meant to add that I almost always wear a belt when Im wearing a dress, and always at my natural waist.

I’m busty with junk in the trunk and they look AWFUL on me!  But my sister is more slender (although she still has a booty) and they look fantastic on her (we’re both about 5’6″).

Thank you for posting this – I have had the same problem!  I’m also 5′ 8″ and disproportionally pear (had a bad winter – ugh) and maxi dresses look AWFUL on me.  I thought they would be OK (cover things up?) but, NO.

Now, I will tell you one style that I did like – it had a loose, halter top and an elastic waistband.  I liked it but it was so cheap and see-through I couldn’t pull the trigger.  But I saw a similar one in a mag and just ordered it – should be here today!  The one I liked also had the diagonal lines which helped the pear factor!  Don’t love the color on this one, but we’ll see, when it arrives today!

I don’t think pear shapped is the best shape for a maxi dress, but it can still be done.  In my mind, maxi dresses are more for no curves/boy shapped/slim/straight body types because it should be tight over the boobs and then not cling to another curve on it’s way down.  Just my opinion though 🙂

Im 5’3″ with no real curves but I have a butt.  I have 2 maxi dresses that make me look taller than normal and I do love them because they’re flowly and fun.  I’ve tried on quite a few but some cling to my butt and ruin the whole “flow” of everything and others are just tooo much and make me look like an olsen twin/bag lady.

@Paiger8:  i LOVE maxi dresses!  I have about eight of them and I think they look pretty darn good with a pair of heels or wedges.  I’m 5’1, around 118 lbs, and gifted in the breast and hip department, so I think the maxi dress with heels makes me look tall and skinny.  Plus they are so comfy and easy to throw on  🙂

I wear ’em. I’m 5’1″, 120lbs and what I call a bottom-heavy vase shape (that is, a less exaggerated hourglass).

I’m 5’1″-5’2″ and it’s been a while since I stepped on the scale but I hover between 115-118. most of that is in my hips, thighs, and butt. I prefer skirts and maxi dresses in the summer because finding shorts that aren’t skin tight in the thighs is becoming an increasingly dreadful task. Rock those long dresses girl! I’ll be there right along with you!
