We got quotes from a travel agent and online. Booking online without a travel agent saved us $2K!

You may save money without a travel agent but the peace of mind is worth it.

You flight gets cancelled? Your travel agent already has a new one lined up.

Issues at your resort? Travel agent will sort them out.

It’s a good investment in my mind. FI’s mom is a travel agent and has gotten people out of a lot of binds. It’s hard to do that yourself when you’re travelling, esp in another country.

I tried both, agent is almost always more expensive, I would just book online. Just use tripadviser.com for reviews and real pics of the resorts that people post to get an honest review of the place.

I found an amazing cyber Monday deal online for our honeymoon AI resort, called our travel agent and she called the resort and they priced matched it Withe our agent! So we got the best deal and have the security if our travel agent, something to maybe see if you can do if you come across a great deal online

@Quackadoo:  My experience with travel agents is that they never find better deals than you find yourself online.

@Quackadoo:  Right. They are there to ensure everything goes smooth. She had one customer whose flight was cancelled. The guy never even knew it until he got to the airport and she had already arranged a different flight for him.

She keeps track of every client’s flights, rooms etc and if anything goes wrong, she is there. Even if it is a dispute with management at a hotel- she will address it (as long as its the hotel’s fault). If there is bad service, she will transfer for you.

Also, because of networking with other travel professionals, she gets good deals on excursions etc and you get sort of VIP care because “oh, they booked through Karen.”

I never use a travel agent.  If you posses the ability to do everything you want to your liking I would go that route.  Its almost always a little less expenisve.

I used a travel agent when I traveled to Europe once, and I decided I liked making my own way better.
