So sad they're increasing the cost of streaming+dvd rentals to $15.98 in September.  For us that's an additional $70/year! Looks like we're going to be doing strictly streaming and renting from Redbox for $1/movie since we know we won't rent more than 6-8/month to make up the cost of the Netflix DVD service.  Sadness.  I just thought I'd vent and I know some of you can commiserate.

That is really sad. I was considering signing up with them, but won't now. I bet they lose a lot of business...

Yeah, Redbox, Blockbuster, and Hulu or any combination of can offer services cheaper than Netflix...I think this might discourage DVD rentals for Netflix.

Wow, that sucks. We currently have the streaming and 2 DVDs out at a time. That's only going up $4/month. But I think we're going to cut down to 1 DVD since DH prefers just the streaming.

I use it mostly for TV shows so eventually I may get rid of the DVD plan and sign up for Hulu Plus instead.

Netflix is evil. I'm so annoyed at them. Especially since basically all that we use it for is tv shows (both streaming and dvd)... and there really isn't a better option for getting the tv show dvds. But I think we'll probably cancel the dvd side anyways on principal. We pay 9.99/mo for it bc we like blu rays and there is no way we'd use that many red box movies/mo.

    To netflix? A big ol F U.

yeah, i am so irritated. I think I might just get rid of them totally. There are definitely other options that I now prefer.

Yyyyyyyyyyyeah we don't use them as much as we used to. And we really don't need that many movies.

Apparently they're looking to do streaming exclusively so it makes sense that they'd raise the price for physical DVDs and get people to stop using the feature. Of course, the problem with this is they can't get all the DVDs streaming due to the copyrights on the music, so. Shucks.

@CorgiTales:  Yeah, we watch maybe two DVDs/mo.  So it's not cost appropriate for us to continue to use that service and I think a lot of people will be that way so ultimately they'll lose some customers/revenue.

@MissHelen:  That's the downfall of the copyright stuff.  I would love to have everything streaming but there's a time period that the networks want to regain some of their monies.

@beekiss: we haven't watched a dvd from them since like.... october? The thing is... the few shows we really like to watch (like true blood!) arent on instant streaming. But I just talked to DH and he agreed we just cancel our dvd now. I wish everyone could just agree to simultaneously drop them entirely for like 3 mo to force them to not be assholes.

this pissed me off too!  that's a huge increase, & we don't watch enough dvds to justify keeping that part of it.  so i guess it'll just be the streaming stuff from them now

Yep, I'm pretty sure we're canceling.  FI brought up the point today that the only things we stream are shows we already own, they haven't had a good movie on instant watch in foreverrrrr, and we've had the same dvd sitting here in the apartment since January.

    Sorry netflix, your loss.

Yeah, not happy about it either. Didn't they just have a price increase in January?  Now another one?  Also, I know Blockbuster stores went out of business where we live.

Really annoyed that this time last year, I was paying $12 and then it went up to $15 and now it's going up to $20.

I think I'm going to get rid of the streaming part.  Although, I wish I could get rid of all of it.

I would go to red box if it weren't for the fact that they don't have tv shows.

Wow.  I'm really glad you guys posted this because Netflix couldn't be bothered to tell me.  SO not worth the $20 a month it's going up too.  I feel terrible for recommending it to everyone now.

Yeah it sucks. We are going to cancel the DVD portion. Since we don't have cable, we use the Netflix instant channel on our Roku so that's where most of our TV watching material comes from. Oh well :-\

We don't have home internet so we cancelled the insta-streaming - just have DVDs now. I've only had them maybe a year and their prices have gone up twice - so annoying.

Whats most annoying me right now is their radio silence. They drop this bomb yesterday, social media explodes with anger, and there is not a PEEP from them. Its like they popped their heads out of a bunker to make the announcement and now they plan to just lay low, take cover, and wait it out for a while before they begin participating in life again.

I wish it would let you do 2 DVDs per month + streaming. We watch a lot of stuff that isn't available with Redbox, so I am keeping it. It's still way cheaper than going to the movies at least.

I think when I first got Netflix (way towards the beginning) it was $18 or $22 a month for 3 dvds. Then I went to $10 a month with 1 dvd... so it's still falling in the middle for me.

I got that email too. I considered switching to just streaming, but the movies on streaming suck. They are all reallyyyy old titles or movies Ive never heard of. We already pay too much for our cable, I can't justify spending $20/month for access to crappy movies.

I think we will cancel too! 20$ a month seems a bit high! Red box here we come! Too bad we live in the middle of nowhere and still need to drive 20 min to get to a redbox!

Yea, we had a discussion about that last night wondering what the reasoning was behind it.

It sucks because it's like the 2nd or 3rd time this year they have raised their rates. We'll be switching to streaming only once this cycle ends.

    @Bostongrl25:

    Streaming only is 7.99/month.

Lately they have also been a lot slower to get new movies on DVD and I feel less of it because there's a longer than usual wait for new movies.

We currently have the streaming/dvds & thier selection sucks on both. It's nice to have options readily available, but I seriously don't understand why there are SO many not just old, but BAD old movies???

I know very little about this & I'd like to switch to someone else. Who else offers the instant streaming through PS3?

@rachgirl82: I'd like to know too!

My FI and I were just discussing Netflix and trying to reduce costs on them and now with this new news, most likely, will be strictly streaming. I can get DVDs from Redbox/Blockbuster for cheaper than holding on to the DVD portion.

Well I'm glad we're not the only ones bothered by this.  We don't have cable so netflix is our go-to for entertainment.  I think they're going to see a loss in revenue and maybe they might revamp their selections.

I was so irritated yesterday too! I use the streaming a lot but they took off several of my favorite TV shows. Boo. But I think we are going to have to cancel cause even though it is just a couple bucks it is a couple bucks that adds up fast.

Has anyone cancelled?  Do they try to give you a better deal to try to keep you? Or do they not even care?

I just got rid of the streaming.  In the near future, I will probably use other ways to get my tv shows and so that means...  See ya later, Netflix!!!

I got the email too! I hate that they are doing two different plans now. We will probably just stream from Xbox and Playstation now. It makes me sad, next up in my dvd list was the first season of Sex and the City! If only all the shows and movies could be streamed.

We don't have cable either so Netflix was our go-to for tv entertainment.  We don't watch a ton of movies, we're more tv series people, so we LOVED having the DVD option for our tv shows once the newest seasons were coming out.  Think we're just going to do the streaming & cancel the DVD portion since when we're not watching a tv series, we let movies sit around for a week or 2.. not really worth it.  Guess we'll have to find another way to watch the new tv shows & just Redbox it when we want a movie.

This really upset me. FI told me that he heard tht Netflix wants to go completely stream. I understand that and it would be awesome to do so, but their streaming selection is terrible. I have a DVD sitting on my tv stand from March, and I think I have streamed one show in the past month. Sorry Netflix but you are being canceled.

@yrret107: I just canceled and it didn't offer me anything else. But I canceled over the internet, I wonder if they will try to talk you into it if you call them and cancel.

On their website when you cancel it just asks you a bunch of questions, and it didn't offer "canceling because of the raise in rate" as an option. It didn't even have a comment box so I could type that in.

I'm surprised by the number of people who will be using redbox instead of netflix DVDs.  Maybe the selection is different in certain areas, but our redbox doesn't have that great of a selection, and the movies don't generally "stick around" for too long after they're released.

I'm definitely upset with the news.  We were planning on joining netflix once we have more time, because they are tons of tv shows that you can only get through the DVD rentals.  I should mention that we are currently taking advantage of the online streaming (thanks FILs!) and we use it all the time, but we're almost done watching all of the good stuff!
