Boss just told me I can't take vacation time because I'm sick???

@MrsRevolutionize:  What the….? I can see being upset if you were trying to use sick time as vacation time, but vacation time as sick time? C’mon! That’s ridiculous.

Get a doctor’s note for the time (just do it tonight even if you don’t take off work) and if they flag you, let them know if you want to spend your vacation barfing/coughing/sneezing/sleeping/etc. you WILL, dammit!

The place I used to work had a policy like this. You couldn’t use sick time for a personal day, or vacation or personal time if you were sick or going to a doctor’s appointment. I kinda get it, but in this case I think it’s a bit ridiculous, especially if it’s this close to a holiday. I would have just fibbed and said Aunt Sadie or whomever was coming in early and you had to go pick her up at the airport. I’m sorry they’re having you work when you don’t feel well. Once I used up all my sick time for a gnarly sinus infection and my old employer refused to allow me to take any vacation time to recover, so I understand.

@MrsRevolutionize:  Stupidest thing I’ve ever heard!  If one of my employees was willing to take vacation while really sick I’d insist they use sick time and reassure them that I would take card of any flagging if it happened. She can stand up for you to her boss/the company for you. As a manager, that’s her job. However; if you work in an industry that is so controlled that she can’t vouch for you then she certainly should let you use vacation. Dishonest?????   Bah Humbug!

WTF is up with getting an incident if you’re out sick?!!? That’s ridiculous!! Talk about scare tactics to force people to work when they really shouldn’t. That promotes a healthy work environment… but it’s also ridiculous that you can’t take a vacation day, regardless of what it’s for. I can’t believe your boss is shaming you to either come in to work or get “flagged” for being sick.

The “dishonesty” thing is silly.  That said, a few companies I have worked for have a certain amount of time you must have your time in for vacation prior to taking it.  If she said that, I would understand.

that sucks 🙁 i had a job once that would penalize you if you used sick time when you were really on vacation/playing hookie for the day. someone got fired for being caught at a red sox game by the boss’s boss who was there with clients. i guess i kinda get it, since thats not what those days are for… but you should be able to use vacation time any way you’d like!

at my job now we just have a huge bucket of non-specified days we can pull from, works way better for slackers like me!

@MrsRevolutionize:  I’m going to play devil’s advocate. It sounds like you have 2 different kinds of PTO: vacation and sick time. Some companies lump it all into one general category, and some have a specific definition of what is what. I’ve worked for companies with both types of policies. 

To your boss, it sounds like calling in sick is a big deal, hence the “incidents.” Now, everyone gets sick unexpectedly, but if it’s your company’s policy to count calling in sick as a incident, it could come across to your boss that you are evading another “incident” by just taking a vacation day instead. So yes, it is dishonest. 

While I don’t necessarily agree with the line in the sand your boss drew, you should suck it up, go to your doctor, drink lots of tea and soup (I also love the Alka seltzer version of theraflu – the kind you stir into hot water to make tea), and go in for the 1/2 day.

I don’t mean to be rude, and I definitely don’t like the way your boss handled it (employee health should be really imporant) it sounds like you basically said you were going to lie, and take an unplanned vacation day to avoid being written up. 

Hopefully tomorrow is nice and quiet.
