Hi Boston bees,
I have a silly/simple question. I know that there is a 3-day waiting period for marriage licenses, but what does that mean exactly — do we go back 3 days later to pick it up, or is it mailed to us? If it’s a pick up, do we both go back to pick it up (or can one of us go)? Does anyone know? The city’s website doesn’t seem to explain it fully. Either is fine, but I’d like to know what to expect (and if I’ll need to take more time off work to go back and pick it up)!

If it’s the same for all of MA (I’m just north of Boston) I went back in to pick it up. We didn’t both have to be there for the pickup. I don’t think they mail it…

Applying for a license in Boston proper is a piece of cake….you fill out 2 sheets of info, pay the cashier, and hold up your hand to solemnly swear the info is correct. No id check, nothing. And then one of you can go back in 3 days to pick it up. We did it yesterday for our wedding on Saturday, and it was, by far, the easiest thing we have had to do, wedding-wise. 🙂 Good luck!!

It does have to be picked up any time after the 3 day waiting period is over. You don’t have to get it right on the third day.. you can get it any time before the wedding. Also, since I live out of state I specifically asked about having someone else pick it up and that’s not a problem.
