Have you thought about having someone you know perform the ceremony? My husbands father did ours, and it was so great. and free! Here is the application. You send it in about 8 weeks before with $25, and then you get the license and you're all set! I also liked it because we are also non-religious, so we didn't feel pressure from religious officiants and we pretty much got to personalize our entire ceremony.
Kerry -- Did you find anyone yet? Our wedding isn't for 17 months, but this is one of the things I want to get out of the way. Thanks!
We did find someone! I'm not sure what you're looking for for your ceremony as far as tone/religion, etc. But we booked Robin from Radiant Vows (http://www.flowingforce.com/radiantvows_home.htm)
We haven't met to put together our actual ceremony yet, but our first meeting with her was great. She's very down to earth, smart, and funny. She works with any couple whether their agnostic, interfaith, same sex, etc. Once you book her, she also provides a great resource book with different wordings of each part of the ceremony and examples of readings so you can choose from her booklet or customize however you want.
I knew she was right for us when she referred to my 2 co-maids of honor as the "babes of honor." :)
Thanks Kerry!
She looks great! I love how she spelled it out in the "fees" section -- all without telling how much she charges -- do you mind sharing how much you are paying?
It's a bit pricey, with the rehearsal, day of, materials she provides, and as much contact as you need with her to design your ceremony it's about $750 total, I don't have the exact number in front of me.
Try the Rev. Jerrie Hildebrand of Salem, she's Interfaith and tries to be cometitively affordable.

Does anyone have any recommendations for an officiant in the North Shore area? We're getting married in October and still need to find someone (I know, we're slackers!) We had a lead on a friend of a friend who is a JP, but she hasn't returned my calls.
We're not very religious and are doing our ceremony outside in Newburyport. We're looking for someone genuine, not cheesy. And preferably someone who also marries same sex couples. We are not same sex, but would like our officiant to support gay marriage.
