So after a long list of likes/dislikes on engagement rings, and trying a on few here and there with Boyfriend or Best Friend, we (ok, I) decided on a classic tapered baguette style ring. He really liked everything I tried on and just wanted me to be happy so I choose something that I felt would still be reflective of my style some 10, 15, 20 years from now. The next few weeks comprised of me scouring the internet for the perfect setting and lo and behold, I found it! We discussed it and looked it over throughly and then PURCHASED IT, eeep!!
I didn’t want to crush any dreams my Boyfriend or Best Friend had of surprising me with a ring he had picked out, but I also didn’t want to be faced with navigating the sensitive subject of not really liking the setting he chose (ouch!), so we compromised and I picked the setting and he’s choosing the main stone. 🙂
I think Boyfriend or Best Friend will be proposing sometime in the winter based on the timeline we’ve talked about and his graduation date being around that time, too. I’m SO excited to be engaged to the most wonderful man on the face of the planet, but I was curious if there were other bees out there who have picked out their own setting? I hope it doesn’t make me seem overly picky and materialistic :/

I’ve basically picked out my own setting, but whether or not he gets that one is another story. Chances aren’t likely he’ll stray though.

Let’s see! You have a picture?
Edited to add: I sort of picked out my own setting. I wanted a particular style, narrowed it down to 2, then he chose his favorite of those 2.

Thanks ladies! This board is awesome!
@gferg – here ya go!
Sorry my hands are so, uhm, ugly lol! So, we bought this mounting with no center stone. I’m hoping he goes for a round center! I wear a ring size 4 – so anything over a carat looks a little silly on my puny fingers – to me at least. This center is .71 radiant just for dimentions sake, even though I know the term carat refers to the weight not the size. 🙂

I picked out my original engagement ring (RB tiffany-style solitaire) AND my wedding set upgrade. That may seem extremely materialistic, but I’m really not and neither is my husband. I chose a solitaire with a nice diamond originally with the intention of setting it into something more “me,” when we had more money down the line. My husband knows nothing about rings, diamonds and the 4 Cs and all that, so he was relieved when I offered to pick it out. Mind you, he did have input. I picked several rings and we chose the one we both loved the most.

I (sort of) picked out my own setting (and center stone, actually) 🙂 we looked together online, he showed me it, I waffled, then really fell head over heels for it. Me being the bargain hunter I am (and connoisseur of finding great quality for great value), I noted the BrilliantEarth setting and found out that they get (some of? All of?) their designs from Unique Settings of New York, which Good Old Gold also sells, for less. GOG is also known for its high quality center stones so I picked out a gorgeous H&A stone and voila. They also did not charge extra for a 6-prong setting, which BrilliantEarth did.
Sorry for the big long story, just wanted to share my shopping experience, and my own preference for the lady getting her say in it 🙂

That’s great! My Fiance picked out the first one and it was really great. He picked out the the stone and the setting and had them put together. My Fiance wasn’t happy with the gold or how the diamonds were set in there, plus we were a little worried that the stone would get traded, so we just picked another ring. We both picked it out together and we are both very happy with it.

don’t feel materialistic! My boyfriend kinda wanted to make sure I got the ring I wanted so I would be happy. He asked around though for a good place that was right for him within budget, payments etc, and he was told by a friend that the place we went to was GREAT for military. So he called, picked out the diamond himself and then took me there and made it seem like I picked out the diamond and setting. So in the end, I chose the setting and he chose the diamond like you and your boyfriend did!
