You could check on what the prohibition really means. Maybe its possible to drop silk petals, or other artificial ones - they probably just don't want real petals ground into the carpet.
suzanno, I know in Catholic churches you cannot throw petals because of the act of throwing something onto the ground. I'm going to guess that the reasoning isn't because of them not wanting real flowers, just not wanting anything thrown on the ground.
excuse the old cheesiness of this picture, but it's from about 10 years ago, of my sister and a second cousin who were flower girls in a wedding:

my aunt, who did the flowers, used one of those green um water sponge thingys, fitted them into the basket (with a container at the bottom of the basket to catch the water) and arranged flowers in the basket that way. it kept the flowers alive longer and was still pretty nice.
just don't go nuts on the green foam sponge thing - if it's too heavy, then the flower girl will tell you in the middle of the ceremony. my sister when she was five was a flower girl in another wedding and the ceremony lasted about an hour. she had to stand up there the ENTIRE time holding the world's heaviest basket! in the video you can see her turn around ask if she could put the basket down.
Thanks everyone! Maybe I'll do DIY silk flowers to keep it light for the flower girl to carry. Thanks for the photos and suggestions!
We did this too because my flower girl was just over 2 and probably couldn't have grasped the concept of throwing just the petals. It worked out beautifully, she just carried the pretty basket with flowers stuck in it down the aisle.
good luck!
ok this is my first time trying to post a picture..i hope this works. anyway. it's a picture from a friend's wedding that had flowers in a basket. though it WAS very heavy..but the flower girl (3year old) loved the basket so much she wouldn't let go of it..haha..

I already spent $$ on a flower girl basket, only to find out today that we're not allowed to drop petals in the church. I still want to use the basket because it's cute and we already spent the money. Would it be weird to have a little bouquet made up to fit in the basket and have her carry it down the aisle?
