boutique hotel.  You’re on your honeymoon why stay in a standard room.  But you’ll be in Hawaii, so either way you win 🙂

We have traveled a lot and stayed in all types of rooms from not so pretty to OMG pretty!  Honestly the hotel didn’t make the difference in our trips.  It is the activities and places to eat that did.  For example, when in Hawaii we stayed at a friends house for a couple of nights to save some $$ and then we stayed at the nice Marriott on the beach.  We really liked the decor of the hotel similiar to the second one you have pictured, but all we did there was shower and sleep.  I did sit in the hot tub one night while there but we didn’t use the pool.  I would look at the locations and the beachfront of the two hotels and go with the one that has more beach front and activities to offer you that are included.  That’s how we choose our hotel for our honeymoon in St. Lucia.  We went with the one that had more activities for the $$.

    HOpe that helps.

I am also debating between these two places.  I don’t know which to pick.  Did you find one to be cheaper then the other?

i don’t know if you’ve booked your hotel already, but i was going to say that i stayed at outrigger reef for my honeymoon just last week, and both my husband and i loved it (we booked it through Costco as well). the room was much better than what it looks in the photo, and though the view from our partial ocean view wasn’t as great as it would have been from an ocean view room, the room itself was spaceous and very very clean. you can definitely tell that they did a great job at renovating the place. also, we really loved the location of the hotel, as everything was in walking distance.

we stayed here three nights, and two nights at Royal Hawaiian, and we both wished that we had booked five nights at the outrigger reef 🙂

i’ve only passed by hotel renew on the way to outrigger, so i can’t really compare them objectively. but i don’t think you’ll be disappointed in either hotel. if you do stay at outrigger reef, try the Ocean House restaurant at sunset time– the view was amazing. congratulations and have a great time in Oahu!

I know you said you’ve already booked, but we’ve actually stayed at Hotel Renew last summer! We went through some of the same thoughts re: boutique hotel vs. resort, but we were really happy with our decision. We loved the hotel and the location. We didn’t miss having a pool at all, since the ocean was a block away. And its at the end of hotels, so the beach wasn’t too packed either, There was no restaurant / room service, but we found the staff to be very friendly and they always remembered us. They also had towels / chairs / boogie boards to take to the beach.

The only downside was that Hotel Renew wasn’t *quite* as luxurious as the pictures made it out to be – our room was kinda dim (especially in the bathroom) and some wallpaper in the hallway was peeling. That being said, we still think we made the right decision. And the beds were incredibly comfortable!

Well I live on Oahu and actually just moved out of Hawaii a few months ago!  But I’m sorry to say of all the hotels I’ve stayed at I’ve never even heard of Hotel Renew.  Personally I have stayed at Outrigger and I liked it…  To me I like the POSSIBILITY of ordering room service if I want it…although I don’t always use it.  Or a restaurant on property.  But it really just depends what your priorities are…  It sounds like you’re booking a nice place!  Good luck!

Be careful. Hotel Renew is half a block from the beach and Outrigger is right on the beach. It will probably make a  difference in the whole experience. Plus drop in that you are honeymooning and Outrigger will probably give you some special nice things b/c they have been in business there forever. ***oops, just saw you already booked. I am sure you will have a great time. The hotel looks beautiful! You can always enjoy a great time eating at the restaurants nearby. Hula Grill has  a great view/affordable breakfast.
