I think there's tons of places you can find in NYC. However, for the price of $500 you probably wouldn't be able to go too unique or high end - like you stated about small designers.
I would recommend the fashion district area (35th St - 40th St between 6th - 9th aves) All these stores are independantly owned and sell on a retail & wholesale basis. Personally I shop there sinse I do a lot of events where I need formal gowns. Shop around and sometimes you can even get a good deal if you buy more than one. They are quite willing to negotiate prices in these areas.
Good Luck!

Hi Bees,
Since I'm only having my sister as my matron of honor I really want to find a unique gown for her to wear. We're having a black tie wedding so the more formal the better.
My original thought was to stay away from department stores to avoid her wearing something that one of my guests could wear so that leaves traditional bridesmaids lines and boutique stores.
She's already tried on something at Vera Wang maids that she loves but isn't completely sold on so if anyone has any suggestions for small designers or boutique stores in the city that would be super helpful. I'd like to keep the price max at $500 but would be happy to pay less if possible.
Thanks in advance for your help!
