At first glance, would you consider Cameron a boy's name or a girl's name? (I know it can be used as either, but what is your instinct?)

My very first instinct is boy because in person, the only people I've known named Cameron were boys.  But I do think it definitely works either way.

I think of it as gender neutral because I know both male and female Camerons.  It's like Pat or Chris, to me; no definite gender stands out from the name.

I honestly don't have a first instinct because I know both, so I think of both male and female Camerons when I heard the name.

@HopingToBeaMama:  The first thing I think of when I hear Cameron is Dr. Cameron from house - who is a woman, but that's her last name. So when I think about it as a first name, I think boy.

I know that it can and has been used for both, but I have only ever known boys with that name, so my first reaction is that it is a boy's name.

I don't find it quite as gender neutral as I do Pat or Chris because those are both nicknames or shortened forms of the traditionally male names Patrick and Christopher or the traditionally female names Patricia or Christine/Christina.  So those are truly both boy names and girl names.  Cameron seems more like a traditionally male name that is now being used by girls as well.  Of course, "boy name" and "girl name" are pretty subjective.  There was a time when Ashley was a boy name, but I bet now there are 100 female Ashleys for every male Ashley.

Definitely neutral but my little cousins name is Cameron so I always think of it as a boys name.

I always think of it at first as a boy's name. But I also find it neutral. The girl's I know with the name had parents that "feminized" it so to speak, i.e. Cameran or Camryn. I'm not a huge fan of changing spellings, but because I've been exposed to it, I guess I still think Cameron = Boy, at first.

I only know of two camerons, and they're both girls. So I automatically think girl.

I know there's Cameron Diaz but all the Cameron's I know in real life are boys. So, I voted boy.

Cameron Diaz is the only female I know of with that name where as I've met many males named Cameron.

I definitely think of it as a boys name.

Odd.  The only Cameron I know in real life is a little girl, but my gut instinct is still boy name!

I've known both and I wouldn't think it was odd if I meant a woman with the name Cameron but at first glance I think boy.

With that spelling I would say boy. I know girls that are spelled Camryn.

I've only personally known male Camerons so that was my first thought, but like it a lot for a girl's name!

It can be either one.  Just make sure the middle name isn't gender neutral!

Even though I know it works for either, I more strongly associate it with being a boy's name.  I do have a very close female friend who pronounces her name this way, but she spells it slightly differently.

I think of it as both, I've known Camerons of both sexes, so I say use it for either if you love it. My name is actually gender neutral. I've had people at work that I only correspond with over e-mail address me as Mr. and it's never bothered me. I actually think it's kind of funny, and if I won't ever meet them in person I usually don't even bother to correct them. It doesn't really matter and I don't want to embarrass them.

I used to consider it a girl's name until my cousin named his little boy that, now I automatically think it's a boys name.

I consider it a male name. Every Cameron I've known in my life was a guy. The only female Cameron I can think of is Cameron Diaz.

I'm glad to see it's considered more of a boy's name as it's on our short list of names if our little bub is a boy!

I still think of Cameron as a standard boy's name although it is becoming more popular amongst girls as well.  I think it's similar to a name like Ryan, which is traditionally male of course and usually conjurs up an image of a male upon first hearing it, but it's recently become more popular for little girls, albeit usually spelled with 2 'n's.  It doesn't take away from the fact that it is typically a boy's name though and I think it is a similar situation with the name Cameron.

Boy for sure.  The only Cameron girls I know are Cameron Diaz and Cameron the Terminator.

So I guess really, it is quite acceptable either way.  But I personally would only use it for a boy.

I've never met a female Cameron, and my nephews name is Cameron, so I think boy automatically. But I think it is a unisex name, and can be used for both. I don't really like unisex names though because they can be confusing. I know lots of Jamies both male and female, And I always think it's too feminine for boys and to masculine for girls. Cameron shortened to Cammie is nice though. I also know a Camille and a Camilla which are similar names.

It's really gender neutral to me...but I chose boy. I wouldnt think it was weird for a girl to be named Cameron at all. Actually, I really like the name for a girl more so than a boy.
