I think it's more of a younger look so not really great for going to the office or out on a date, etc. but if you're at home, going to the store, walking the dog, I don't see why you couldn't wear them.
In the hair world, braids are making an enormous comeback.
They are being used in updos, side chignons, fishtails etc.
I love them and often wear a version of a fun and funky braid to work in my salon.
I think it totally depends on the person, their style, and how they wear them. For example, I think these are gorgeous:

But I kind of hate these with the intensity of a thousand burning suns (taken from wikipedia)
@KristenGotMarried: THIS. Agreed.
I've always called them ding dongs! I think they're adorable and I love the way they look on grown women. But... the right way. There is a wrong way. They look super cute under a baseball cap, too.
I agree with PP!! They are super cute and trendy when worn correctly...should be loose, wispy pieces pulled out, and a little shabby chic...super tight ones like above=big no no!
ETA: LOOOVE fishtails! I recently taught myself using YouTube videos, but can't do them on myself...I constantly harass my sister to let me do them on her hair :)
I wear braided pigtails every day all winter, mostly for function rather than fashion. It keeps my hair from moving around in my collar and itching me, or getting tangled in the wind (I'm a ski pro).
I can't find a picture that shows me with BOTH pigtails outside my jacket (they're mostly tucked in): but like this:

@KristenGotMarried: This EXACTLY! Love the first picture, hatehateHATE the second.
I'm part of the "cute when done stylishly" camp. I like them low, loose, and to the back.
Gosh, that sounded dirty.
I wore braided pigtails out in public when my hair was long once in awhile. I'd wear one long braided ponytail to the side as well. I don't care what others think about how I look. FI loved them when I did it.
I love braids, I think they are timeless and can look incredibly romanatic and stylish.
I used to wear pigtail braids and twist under my riding helmet ( horse back) but it doesn't really suit me as a grown woman though.
I've worn my very loose and fashionably done in public and have gotten compliments. Tight woven one's though remind of something for a little girl.

I love braids. I don't wear the pigtailed ones too often out, but I do in the summer because it keeps the hair off my face, and when I take them out my hair is so soft. But I'm half filipino, and when I wear them I feel like pocahantas. But I probably just have insecurities about that since SO many people I know and have known in my life have called me pocahantas even sans braided pigtails.
Honestly, I do it all the time and people always copliment me on it! I don't look too young with them in so I guess it depends on the person's face structure.
They are cute! Not for formal or for professional settings, but for casual ones.

I LOVE my hair with braided pigtails. I have super long, natural shinny brown hair and I LOVE how it looks and feels with braided pigtails. When I am home for an entire day, like the weekends, I usually have my hair in braided pigtails. DH loves them :D
However, I NEVER wear them in public. I think they are silly and probably immature. However, I never wear my hair any different than straight, down or straight in a bun or ponytail. I am a pretty plain person and I dont want to draw attention to myself. I konw that if I ever wore my hair different to work everyone would comment about it. I would be too embarassed/nervous about it. Sounds silly I know.
So, I am curious. How do you ladies feel about briaded pigtails?
This is about the length of my pigtails (except they are brown and not straight out! LOL)
