I'm thinking bowls/vases of something pearl-like. Maybe marbles? Rocks? Something like that...?
How about candlabras sitting on some kind of gold, (like a sheer, textural, soft rose gold, think Martha Steart, not the 80's) fabric, which would have pearls nestled on it, (otherwise, they would roll and that would be dangerous...)
Or, favor centerpices in matching colors, a la Martha.... hope that helps!

I love that picture! Gorgeous and vintage. ^_^
I know it's a very literal take from the picture, but have you considered using teapots and assorted china as vases as a sort of eclectic, shabby chic vibe? You could pop in romantic mixed flowers (like wildflowers, roses, Queen Anne's lace, chamomile flowers, ranunculus, etc...) in pink, white and yellow purchased from the flower market (or home grown if you're ambitious [my coworker did this, so it's not entirely crazy]).
Or, for something crisper, I think this cake would work really well with centerpieces of large groups of candles in vases of varying heights. The first couple images from this search are particularly nice, I think: http://images.google.com/images?q=centerpiece+candles&rls=com.microsoft:en-us&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=gFoVS_DBAo_gMbaqnKkG&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CCUQsAQwAA
@Jenny> I love the candles pics google shot back. I particularly like this one, but instead of rocks and a black/gray tray, faux pearl beads in the bottom, in glass?
i also like the teapots-as-vases idea. thanks all for the suggestions. This is helping me tremendously!
What about pearl wreathes?? I made this one for our ceremony -- they take a bit to make but are sooo pretty :) PM me if you'd like the how-to :)
@dallastxbride: do you have a picture of it?
For that inspiration I see soft, romantic flowers (like peonys) in low vases and lots of candles. You could also collect vintage cups and plates for the place settings.
I just googled "pearl centerpiece" and found a few pretty things. This was the most unique and would really compliment your cake-

I need help brainstorming centerpiece ideas (preferably DIY and inexpensive) that will go with this lovely cake we are using as inspiration for our reception decor (I'm making a similar cake topper with faux pearl hat pin toppers)>> see picture below.
Any ideas??
