I didn't know models could smile: I always thought they were too hungry! I wish all bridal gown photoshoots were done with smiling models. My dress is an Allure C108. Every single photo the model is making this horrible scowl and contorting herself, as though someone just farted and she's wilting. I always have to defend the dress to people when I show them photos.
Yay for happy models! My bridesmaids and I wore Enzoani, who makes beautiful dresses but the models all look underfed, hunched over, and miserable.
@FutureMrsRugbee: Haha I guess I'm lucky then:) My dress is a La Sposa (sister company of Pronovias), and my model just looks a little dramatic, so I guess that's not so bad
I get that it's "high fashion" and what not, but seeing the smile really sells the dress for me. "Hi, I'm a bride, this is my dress, it's my wedding day, and I'm HAPPY!" I really like this trend. I hope they keep it up and that other designers follow suit.
@MrsNeutrino: I know, right? They make such beautiful things. I also noticed that they launched a line with lower priced dresses. Looks like Vera isn't the only one getting a piece of that pie anymore!
@FutureMrsRugbee: oh my goodnes,s that's quite the visual LOL!
@MrsCarnival: I dont think the trend will follow through to the states. Here in the fashion world.. it is about the clothes.. they just need a body to walk down the run way that showcases the clothes..If a headless manaquin could walk.. I am sure they would use those lol. They want the girls to fade into the backgrown... which they tend to do in high fashion. On another note.. I went to the pronovias store in Barcelona.. and I can swear their prices were cheaper than here.. I am not quite sure about their prices here.. but there was this one dress in their window.. red and stunning ! I remember thinking.. jeeze.. I spent the same amount of money on my BCBG dress. I should have taken a picture. Their veils were TO DIE FOR! ofcorse this is before I was engaged so I didn't take advantage :-/ Oh and where is their lower end line being sold? It might make a nice MOB dress for my mom!
i wish they smiled more than on the first page.
@MrsNeutrino: see i disagree. When I went to the Barcelona store (for fun pre engagement) I noticed the dresses were more expensive. I do believe there is a lower demand stateside for pronovias.
@MrsNeutrino: I know it's all about the clothes, but I was hoping it might be a little different with bridal. I wouldn't care at all if regular fashion models never smiled, but I really like seeing it in bridal. I never actually went to a Pronovias store/tried one on when I was dress shopping (more than I was willing to spend), but I definitely oogled their dresses online and went with a La Sposa at a lower price point! I love their cocktail dresses a well, but I can't imagine what occasion I would have to ever wear one. I looooooove the veils I have seen online, so I can only imagine they are even more stunning in person...I'm a sucker for a dramatic veil :) Their more cost-effective line was just for bridal gowns as far as I could tell, but you might want to check the website I linked above and see if their offer some MOB stuff near you.
@MASPA: I noticed as well that it didn't carry all the way through, but I think it's a good start. The beginning and the end of the collections seemed to have more smiles than the middle section for some reason. Plus, that one model REFUSES to smile lol! They look so pretty and bridal when they smile...I just might have to write to Pronovias and tell them how much of a difference it makes.
@MASPA:seriously? I wish I really did take a pic now! The only reason I went in was because of this red dress. It sticks out in my memory.. and it was less than $400 at the time. There might be a lower demand stateside for sure but the dresses are made in spain shipping costs alone would jack up the price..not to mention duties. For them to even make back the money on taxes and shipment.. the prices would need to increase (this is the justification I gave myself when I saw the pricing).. anywho.. FI and I will be going back to portugal soon to pick up bottles of ginjah (flying into spain for a day).. I will be sure to check it out and report back!
@MrsNeutrino: Yup. I couldn't resist the two-tier Cathedral length veil I bought to go with my huge La Sposa ballgown lol!
@MrsNeutrino: maybe its different with the evening gowns. I looked at bridal gowns. and yes, EU taxes are pretty outrageous. but no one complains, not like here.
@MASPA: perhaps! I didn't want to look at too many bridal gowns.. I have this thing about 'not touching' lol! I feel like I am not worthy! hahaha! They were hanging there all white and pristine... It made me feel dirty :-p Even when I went shopping for my own dress! I was so used to watching SYTTD that I didn't expect to pull dresses that I liked lol! I remember thinking.. how heavy these things are!
@MrsNeutrino: Oh if you insist...since you twisted my arm
I only have model pics though...Mom can't take a decent pic to save her life. The veil has a short satin cord and the blusher is waist-length in the front. The train on my dress is Cathedral length as well as the veil.

@MrsCarnival: stunning. simply stunning. I love that it has no BLING on it to be quite honest. Its def a breath of fresh air. And I love the buttons down the back! Now I want buttons! lol!
@MrsNeutrino: Thank you:) I went into this process looking for a little bling, but quickly learned that it doesn't suit me. This dress feels so bridal when I have it on I can't even explain. Buttons were something I wasn't willing to compromise on, so I had to make sure I got those! I love that they go all the way to the tip of the train...it's my favorite detail. I already have my dress, but I feel like it's not as full on the bottom as it is in this picture. I don't want to get too crazy, but I might have to see about adding a little volume once it comes time for alterations. I would show you what I mean, but my Mom only managed to get two blurry pics of half my head, so I don't think that would be much help ;)
They put the price ranges for the collections up now too, thats definitely a recent change.
@MrsCarnival: I always wanted buttons too! I am actually considering adding them to my dress just in the back.. (maybe a couple blue ones).. my dress also has no bling at all :)
@MrsNeutrino: my feelings exactly! when i went to the nyc store they have the dresses in polka dot mesh bags instead of being open and collecting dust or pressed in those plastic-y bags. I was scared to touch, it all looked so crisp.
@LGenz: Oooo good catch. I didn't notice that, but I appreciate the ballpark figures.
@MrsNeutrino: Pony up the pics...you know you want to
@MrsCarnival: love buttons!!
@MrsNeutrino: i was intent on having back buttons until I chose a dress with a side zip. lol. but i also was looking at less-blingy gowns. I was going to replace the fabric buttons with crystal ones to add a bit of subtle sparkle
@MASPA: haha glad I'm not the only one! There is just something about fabric buttons that i love.. and I cant really place it :)
@MrsCarnival: ugh fine.... (I didn't just describe my dress in great detail with the hope of you asking me to post a pic.. what are you talking about :-P ) HERE IT IS
Models generally don't smile and are expressionless, because the focus should be on the clothing, and not on the model themselves.
@MrsNeutrino: Classic Vera...very nice. I think you could totally add a few buttons down the back of the dress seeing as there isn't a lot of other detail outside of the drama on the skirt. Veil? (also, your comment made me lol).
I love that this has totally devolved into a dress thread!
I find smiling models distracting. It draws attention to their faces instead of to the dresses.
I think when a model smiles, you unconsciously have positive feelings, even though the outfit they are wearing might not be right for you. If a dress looks fabulous to you on a model who isn't smiling, it's probably going to amazing on your when you are smiling on your big day. :)
@mrscheetos: I get that, but I like the smiling in the bridal shots because it's so indicative of how the person who is going to be wearing that kind of garment should look. In my opinion, the smile on the model's face really sells the bridal gown and enhances the look of the dress. You're supposed to be happy in your wedding gown, and the smile helps project that image IMHO.
@MrsCarnival: haha me too! I actually ended up buying a used veil off of a bee! I bought some really high end lace and my grandmother sewed it on for me :) the blusher is also waist length!
@MrsNeutrino: *gasp* Your veil. It makes me question mine. Do I need lace? Now I feel like I need lace. Damn you.
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: I absolutely see both sides on this one, and I think I kind of like the idea that they are selling me the dress because the model looks happy. It seems to me like the designer understands how the dress is supposed to make you feel, if that makes sense. I am on board with the smile being a distraction in all other things that aren't bridal, but it adds to the essence of the bridal gown for me when the person wearing it is smiling. I'm sure lots of people will disagree, but that's okay by me :)
@MrsCarnival:haha! by the end of this post we are going to end up with the same dress.. the same veil and all the same wedding details LOL!
BTW, I think smiling people appeals to emotions where as non smiling (showcasing the outfit) appeals to the brain. (well a different part of the brain) One one hand.. happy people sell more dresses because..well.. happy people make other people happy.. smiling people.. make other people smile.. its simply psychology. On the other hand.. Stolid people sell more dresses because the focus is on the outfit. You ignore the person and can focus on the fashion. Honestly...both are true.. both 'sell more dresses'. They just happen to sell more dresses to different audiences. A 'smiling' runway show in NY would have very different responses than the same show in say.....the bible belt.
@MrsNeutrino: Haha, right? (for real though, I didn't put tons of thought into my veil...I might not get lace, but I might reconsider and get something that I put more thought into).
I see both sides of what you are saying as well. It will appeal to different people the same way that fashion does. If I saw a fashion show with street clothes and all of the models were smiling I would think it was weird. I like it with bridal (solely because of the wedding/happiness association, and I'm fine with that), but I wouldn't advocate it for anything else. Agreed on that one for sure.
@MrsCarnival: yep! these people know their stuff.. they use smiles for different audiences. Take victorias secret for instance! They want women to 'think' they look this good and feel this good in their stuff LOL! their fashion shows are filled with beautiful smiling angels haha. If you want to add lace to your edge you should check out the place I bought mine from! they were awesome.. and the lace is VERY well made! Vogue Fabrics
I love the smiling models for bridal fashions! I mean...what's more distracting, trying to figure out what put a scowl on a model's face or a simple smile?
I am wearing a La Sposa and love the dress and everything about the line and the main line Pronovias.

I would just like to take a minute to thank Pronovias for having their models smile in their pictures. I think it really makes a difference to see them looking happy, like a bride on her wedding day. Kudos!
