If it were me I would do what the doctor told me to do.

It’s very scary. But you should do as your doc recommended. It’s always a better prognosis when anything is caught early

Have you talked to your doc to see how they feel?

cafelatte:  I have a lot of experience with this as I have breast cancer. In my experience it has been one or the other. Ultrasounds are better for young breast tissue (which is why at least here they don’t recommend mammograms until you are 50) due to it being dense.

However unless you doctor is trying to pad their wallet (do you suspect that?) I would trust that they know what they are talking about. Without knowing exactly what your doctor is seeing (exam, past results etc) no one here can really tell you the right answer. ANother doctor however might. My recommendation is to always get a second opinion.

cafelatte:  Mammo is a simple test, not painful, uncomfortable at worst. I have one every year.

I would much rather do any recommended tests so anything brewing could be caught early.

I think I would rather be thorough than leave it to chance.

cafelatte:  I’d make the same decision you did in all honesty. I’d go with the ultrasound first, see what those results say, then if still needed I’d get the mamogram. However my insurance sucks so I’d be paying it all out of pocket myself (until I pay out my deductible of $3,500)- if insurance covered it all I’d just do it all. I wou;dn’t be worried about the radiation risks with just one mamo…

Now I feel like I need to mention the cyst I had last year to my gyno at my annual…. =(

I’m 26 and I have had a lump in my breast for the last couple years… I have had an ultrasound on it SEVERAL times and each time they say it’s probably just a cyst but just to watch it. I agree, but I have had to go in for an ultrasound every 6 months for the last 3 years and that gets old fast!!! Not to mention that everyone always thinks I’m pregnant when I am going for an ultrasound haha! For what it’s worth, I’m in Canada, so I’m not paying per test or anything.

If I were you I’d get both and be done with it… better to be sure then to have any doubt right?

cafelatte:  My Dr asked me if I wanted to “just to be sure” after the first ultrasound. But because my sister went through the exact same thing and having it biopsied left her with a swollen and brusied and painfull boob I chose just to watch it.

You’re right, I’m not sure what a mammo would show over an ultrasound, but I’m no Dr so I really have no idea.

It’s your body, so it’s up to you. But there’s a reason that we listen to our Doctors and not our friends when it comes to medicine.

AllieBee12:  Please get it aspirated. basically they just stick a big ass needle into it and pull out some fluid for testing.

My sister has had a lot of cyst and if I went by your thinking I would never have gotten my first “probably just a cyst” lump checked beyond US. Yeah it was cancer. Why would you even dice with something like this especially when if cancerous and caught early it can save your life.
