I got my first pump as a shower gift before the baby arrived, but did not open it until I was sure breastfeeding was going to work for us (that way I could have still returned it).

I had the Avent Isis Pump, which stopped working on me in less than a month! Luckily the store where it was purchased allowed me to exchange for a new pump (since it was a manufacture defect). I ended up getting the Medela Pump In Style Advanced and LOVE it! This is the pump I recommend to everyone whose BFing. Easy to use and portable.

I can only answer the first one, since I’m not due until Sept. I really wanted to buy one of the fancy $300 ones right away, which my mom discouraged me from doing since I don’t even know if I’ll be able to breastfeed (you just never know, my cousin went in with every intention of Boyfriend or Best Friend but her milk ducts got badly infected and she was unable to) or if I’ll be able to pump, so she told me I should wait.

I ended up though getting the motor for the breast pump from a friend (I checked to make sure it worked) and bought all the stuff for it (shields, bottles, tubes, valves, etc) for about $40. I figure $40 is not a huge investment if it doesn’t work out for me, but if I had to buy a new one, I’d wait until I could at least see if pumping was something I could do.

Everyone seems to recommend Medala Advanced Pump in Style the most, from when I’ve asked around.

I got my pumb before my son was born. I used it to pump so I wasnt so full and to feed because my son wouldnt latch on. So I had to pump in order to feed him. Medala pumps are nice. I would reccomend that. I loved mine.

I waited- I rented a hospital pump from the hospital for a couple months and then bought myself a Medela PIS right before going back to work. I liked having the hospital pump in the beginning, I think it really helped build up my supply.
