Had the afternoon off today so perfect time to DIY some makeup… I’m not sure if to go pro or DIY in all honesty… I’ve found a lady where I am from that seems to be really good but the truth is most of the weddings I’ve been to, I have never liked the bride’s makeup (generally its WAY too much). I’m quite pale so I don’t want tons of contouring and all that, and even though I enjoy makeup (on myself and others) I generally like a more natural look so even though I’m a big fan of the cat-eye eyeliner and lip gloss, I don’t tend to use blush/bronzers/primers etc etc.
Nevertheless this doesn’t mean I’m not open to using some of that stuff on my wedding day…. just not TONS of it. My skin is also very sensitive so using a makeup artists, makeup which is used on a lot of people and aren’t specific brands doesn’t seem like a great idea but then again I want to look great on my day!
So I’ve come up with three looks… I LOVE red lipstick but due to our wedding colours (blush, cream and metallics) pink lipstick seemed like a better fit. Please note that I’m just using the makeup I have at home and was just experimenting (so this would be a very rough version).
Look 1: Quite subtle, lips looks a little darker in person and excuse my lounging-around-the-house-just-woken-from-a-nap face haha.
Look 2: Eyes are little more done up and lips are a dark pink (was thinking maybe for the reception and a lighter lip for the ceremony for example)
Look 3: I defined my eyebrows a little more in this one, the lip is lighter than the above and more of a bubblegum pink and eyes are more defined than above, added lower lash liner and added purple to the crease and a glittery grey for a more dramatic eye.
I will need to get some primer and a good foundation since I couldn’t find mine so I don’t have foundation on just a little concealer so I think that would make a huge difference.
What do you think? Do you think my DIY is too amateur? Do you prefer one of the looks or have suggestions?
Would love to hear from fellow bees!

Oh & I want to add falsies or eyelash extensions

Just a tip: If you DIY, be sure to buy an eyeshadow base to eliminate oil and even your eyelids! Your eyeshadow will hold really nicely 🙂

@FutureMrsSarah: I like the idea of lash extensions and/or false lashes. Recommend you definitely define your browns. Even in the close-up pics your eyebrows are faint so if you’d like them to show up in pics, define, define, define!
Can you take some pics a little further away from your face? We can all see really well close up but if the camera is 10 feet from you, will will see the make-up then?
Red lips are hot but you’ll need to keep reapplying and you’ll leave marks on anyone you kiss. I’d go pinker personally.
Also, I’d define your eyes better in addition to the lashes. A subtle sweep of color could really make them pop.

@OnceUponATime: Thanks, I totally agree, it doesn’t seem to hold very long otherwise

I like your eyes best in #2, but the lip is a bit bright for my taste. I think #1 is too neutral (if something isn’t showing up in these pix, it won’t show it in your wedding pix). In #3, I’d change the eyeliner. The liner should go all the way across the lid on the top (looks like it’s only going halfway), but not all the way across on the bottom (it closes the eye- if you want to do liner on the lower lid, just do the outer half). Your skin is amazing! My understanding is that for weddings, don’t be afraid to emphasize your eyebrows more than you usually would, and wear more blush than normal. I think you can go DIY if you play with it a bit more. You’ve got plenty of time.

@LilRhodyGem: Thanks for your advice, I’ve just taken it all off otherwise I’d take more photos, will do on my next try . My plan is lash extensions because falsies will get on my nerves after a while haha, my eyebrows (and lashes, good thing mascara exists!) are always an issue, its the bad thing about being a natural blond! I’m definitely going to define but I don’t want it to look too fake if you know what I mean.
I have this amazing red lip stain that actually stays on for hours and it doesn’t fade but I’m not sure it really goes with the look we are going for so I’ll keep that for a vow renewal haha. The pink shown in look number 2 is literally the cheapest lipstick I’ve ever bought (more like a matte lip gloss) (about $2) and I like LOVE it because even though it is bright is does not come off easily and it lasts for hours without that super dry feeling a lot of the longer-lasting lipsticks have so its definitely a strong competitor .

@EastMeetsBarn: I agree that the first look did not photograph like I expected it looked far better in person but very washed out on photos. Thanks that is so sweet of you! I actually thought my skin looked awful in these photos (the combination of the lack of foundation and summer bringing out all my freckles haha).
The top liner is actually full way on all of them it just thins into the lash line and the bottom is actually half way (outer half) just on the third look as the others just have mascara but no eyeliner on the bottom half.
I would change a few things : I’d wear foundation (no duh there haha), I’d also wear primer and more blush (I only had a tiny bit since I’m not really used to wearing it) and I’d define my eyebrows a little more as well as add lash extensions.

I like look three (what’s the lip color you’re wearing?), but honestly, I’d go pro. I know that, in person, a bride’s makeup looks really heavy, but it HAS to be in order to show up in pictures. I DIYed my makeup for my engagement pictures, went heavier than normal, and you still could just baaaarely tell that I had anything on. I needed WAY more blush and lip color. Your eyebrows really need to be brought in, as well.

@FutureMrsSarah: I love makeup steals! $2 for a prized lipstick is AWESOME! Let us know what you finally decide on!

I think #2 with a lighter lip would be good. Just to throw this out there, I think one of the big differences between pro and DIY is that pros know what products to use for being photographed. There’s a big difference between doing your makeup for everyday stuff and doing makeup that will look great in tons of pictures. A pro will take into consideration the lighting at that time of day, the lighting in your venue, your skin type, etc. and know the best products to use. Pros can also stick around to do touch-ups after the ceremony, during the reception, etc. It takes a lot of stress away in terms of “Omg, I must make myself look perfect for the big day!” I’m a bit of a makeup enthusiast (watch all the YouTube gurus, like to try new products, know how to do my makeup very well), but for all of the reasons I listed I’m going pro for my wedding day.

I would say to hire someone. Make sure to do a trial run to make sure that you like the application and feel comfortable with it. I am a makeup artist, and will be hiring someone else to do my makeup. Here are of the few reasons why-
Its your wedding day…enjoy being pampered! How often do you get your hair and makeup done and let everyone pamper you? Also, its one less thing you have to stress over!
Its going to be a crazy, busy, hectic day…and you want to make sure that your makeup will last all day (other than re-applying lipstic and blotting powder!)
Although the makeup application might feel heavier than normal, but remember that make artists are going to make sure that your makeup looks flawless for pictures! (You might feel that its “heavier” makeup in person, but it will still look very natural in pictures)
Definitely do false eyelashes! You can get “natural” looking eyelashes that just make your eyelashes look fuller or longer and they always look amazing in pictures, without being “OMG WHAT IS ON YOUR EYES?” LOL (btw…done those eyelashes in vegas, super fun but way in your face! LOL)
Don’t be afraid to ask questions and play with different looks in your trial run! My average trial run i try to do a minimum of 2-3 different looks. Start “natural”, do a neutral smokey eye, or a glam smokey eye..or dramatic makeup…but give yourself the opportunity to try different ideas! Some brides like to get their FI’s input and walk around in the makeup for the day to make sure they feel comfortable. Others will decide they want one look and then change their mind..or decide they want something in between.
Everyone assumed since I do makeup that I would be doing my own…nope..not a chance. I don’t get to be pampered or get my makeup done very often…and I plan on enjoying it! Also, I love seeing other people’s styles and ideas on me! Makes it more fun. haha
