Need help……my dress is satin(and awesome!) and my girls have just gotten their dresses, and we all loved them!! Now, I’m wondering if their dresses ‘go’ with mine? Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses are chiffon. Will the two different fabrics look ok together? I don’t want to look a lot more formal than them, and we do love the dresses, but I’m concernedI went with the wrong look by not having them in satin as well???? 🙁

I was in the same situation as you. My dress is satin and the original dress we picked was chiffon. I thought it would look best because my bridesmaids have very different body types. Even though it wasn’t the same material as mine, it still looked pretty good with my dress. They mirrored each other in different ways.
Right before they placed the orders, though, we looked again and found a great dress in satin. The fabrics being the same is definitely a nice thing… though I don’t necessarily think it’s THAT important.

I have been totally laissez faire about the choice of my bridesmaid dresses. I chose a color from David’s Bridal and decided on knee length dresses but otherwise let my girls have at it. They each chose a different dress with differing fabrics… even from each other, not just my dress (which is taffeta so again different!). My philosophy was that I have a group of beautiful ladies with very different body types. I wanted them to feel comfortable and beautiful standing up with me.
I think it matters how formal you want your overall “look” to be. I think it looks more formal to have everyone in exactly matching dresses with the same fabric – especially satin. I wasn’t concerned about the formality of the look for my wedding. I’m not planning a casual wedding by any means but it’s also not black-tie.
Basically, that was the long winded way of saying I think it’s completely fine for your bridesmaids to be in a different fabric. It’s your wedding! There are no “rules” to what you can and cannot do in terms of dressing yourself or your girls!! I say go for it if you love the dresses!!!

I think its fine. My gown is shantung silk and lace and my girls are wearing long chiffon gowns. Additionally, they’re all wearing different styles (same color, same designer). I think all of the different dresses look great together – but that’s definitely personal preference. I definitely think it looks fine, and usually better, if the BMs are not wearing the same fabric as the bride. But again, this is all personal preference. And for what its worth, we are having a very formal, black tie wedding.

@NBK: to me it is preferable for the fabrics to be different…I don’t like the whole matchy-matchy thing. My dress is satin like yours, and I went with chiffon for the BMs dresses as well, I think everything will look really nice!
I felt the satin Bridesmaid or Best Man dresses wouldn’t be as flattering on everyone as the flowy and more forgiving chiffon.
