You are required now to check your garment bags, as many of our company's executives found out. So, unfortunately, you can't just fly with your garment bag.
Sadly, there is almost no way to get around NOT checking your wedding gown. Travel insurance? Crying? A suitcase lock?
What a sucky thing
You can buy your gown a seat. I've seen people do it. I would ship it ahead of time.
That's awesome! Wow, You spend all that money on your seat, though, and then you spend $300 on a plane ticket for your dress? Do you strap it in? i guess if it's huge that's one thing...Hmmm.
I think i would have packed mine up as tightly as I could and then have it pressed once I arrived. Agreed, though, I would have shipped it early and had it confirmed and some other stuff. Yiiikes.
OMG!
Im so sorry to hear this
..... Im getting married in another country and i was planning on taking my garment bag with me ... you know i dont want to loose it!!!! do you know if i would have to check in my bag for international flights?
I cant believe this?
That's insane! I would be so pissed and take them to small claims court. You don't just steal a person's wedding dress! Jeeze!
Ok i just called BA and the lady told me that the rule is NO
but that i can request this once i get to the airport uuufff... im not waiting that long to know he he he i just called the supervisor at miami airport and hopefully she would get back to me soon.
I am having a second wedding in Turkey (groom is Turkish) and will definitely be buying a first class seat for my dress!!! Okay, well, maybe not first class...
Is a seat for a dress the same price as a seat for like, a person? I don't get why you can't just hold it if you're willing to be miserable holding the big thing. Do whatcha gotta do, ladies! Can you buy a Child's seat? Or do they have Garment pricings? Hmmm.
Yeah bummer about the garment bags, Glad i was able to spread the news at least! I'm sure there will be lots of surprised brides in the upcoming months.
You can't hold it because you can't hold anything expect a baby during takeout. Luggage and purses have to be stowed. As far as reduce pricing, there isn't any as far as I know. Children over the age of 2 are the same price as adults...and dresses I guess.
I suppose it just depends on how "fluffy" it is but I have a friend who had hers rolled with tissue between the layers of the "roll" so it fit in a overhead compatiable duffle bag to carry it on then had it steamed when she arrived at her destination. She shipped her fluffy underskirts.
Wait, is that on all airlines that you can't carry on a garment bag? What about folding it in the overhead bin?
I just called American Airlines and was told that for domestic travel (on large planes) there should be no problem carrying on a wedding dress.
Oh my goodness, that's horrible! :o I hope she sues them or something and gets compensated.
I called the airline today and they told me that they dont allow me to carry my dress because that is policy but the supervisor advised me to call the miami airport to the BA counter to ask for their help and they might let me... otherwise i will just take it in the suitcase.
ive bought an extra seat on the flight just so i could take something with us on the plane and strap it into the seat next to us
but wouldnt it be better to fedex the dress in a big box and get it steamed when you arrive? at least with fedex you can track it better than the airlines (who admit to losing luggage every day)
I just saw a bride carry her wedding down from davids bridal to antigua, she had no problem and it wasn't checked in
I suggest carry on or pack it as a carry on
I'm having a mini panic attack now... I could possible have to take my dress on 2 international flights. There's no way I can buy and extra seat for $2000 and I'm sure I would be punched in the face by the person sitting next to me if I tried to hold it in my lap for 20 hours. What happened to the magical closet that flight attendants will put your dress in?!
Panic attacking here too... I'm supposed to fly tomorrow! *gulp*
btw, when flying anywhere - ive always found approaching the checkin counter early, with a big smile and super friendly attitude has gained me ALOT of good will with the staff so usually we are excused for having too many luggage (its the scuba gear i tell you not the shoes) and have been upgraded a number of times
good luck tomorrow Joeswifey - positive thoughts coming your way
I've called Northwest Airlines and they told me to call TSA and TSA said that as far as safety regulations go, the dress should be fine, and it would be up to the airlines, so I'm calling another Northwest number I found that is specifically at JFK (I hope). If it were a smaller airport I wouldn't be too worried because they're always so friendly, but this is the big honking JFK I'm going through (plus a connection...) I don't have a folding garment bag, and couldn't find one, just the big white bag. I dont care if the dress is rolled up into a ball in the back of the overhead bins because I can always get wrinkles out. I should have gotten a smaller gown like I originally planned... sigh. Yeah its a "slim A-line" but still... uuugh.
Sorry ladies, I don't know which airline had the new garment bag rule. And I deleted my work email. It may have been American, since that's what my company mostly flies, but I'd call ahead and check, get the name of a person, and worst case scenario, start crying! Surely somebody will feel so awful for you.
Being nice gets me REALLY far at airports. And being dressed nicely always seems to help, too. I hate the stereotype, but I do get treated better if i'm in nicer clothes versus my pj's. For international flights i change once i get my tickets and stuff, lol.
Well, the guy on the phone was VERY friendly but he said the only way it's is GUARANTEED is to put it in a carry on bag so *cringe* it's in there... It was painul, but not having it would be even worse. Good luck to everyone else!
the owner of the bridal boutique where I purchased my dress told me that I am not to check my dress. she said to carry it in the garment bag but to bring a carry-on and be prepared to stuff it in. I have a maggie sottero and she claims they are indestructible. She said to cram it into the backpack, she has had many brides do this, or tell them you will sit on it. she also said that sometimes they will hang it in the captain's closet.
best of luck.
I am taking my dress to Australia in a month. I will follow her instructions. I already have an extra seat from Sydney to Adelaide for my dive gear....hmmm, but my wedding dress is more important to me than diving with great whites for 5 days.
Just to update: I made it through with the dress in a carry on suitcase and no problems (but in a suitcase, I wasn't expecting any!). It wasn't ideal, but when I took the dress out of the bag, it was remarkably unscathed AND unwrinkled! Not sure how that happened, but I'm not complaining :p Oh, and it is a Maggie Sottero
Well, Sottero and Midgley, but same difference. So, if you can get it in a bag, do that, even if it takes some squishing. Another thing I thought about are those vacuum bag things, where you suck the air out and they squish down. Obviously it won't work for a delicate dress, but just an idea. Wrinkles can be fixed, but a lost dress is probably a lost cause heh
A friend of mine got married in Hawaii and I bought my dress in New Orleans & flew with it to Denver where I now live. In both cases, we carried our dresses on in garment bags. I had planned to stuff mine in the overhead compartment & just have it steamed when I got to Denver, but when the flight attendant saw it, she asked if it was my wedding dress & then hung it up for me. This happened on both legs of our flight. Neither flight attendant was under any obligation to do this, but they did. No one said anything to me about not being able to carry my dress onto the plane.
**If I had it to do all over again, I probably would have stuffed it into a suitcase with wheels. Carrying a not-so-light wedding dress through an airport in a garment bag was not so fun, especially since the length meant I had to hold my arm over my head the whole time so the dress wasn't dragging on the floor.
Someone suggested to me (before I picked up my dress) about asking them to put it in the captain's closet, but I was told this would be a breach of airline security. And it makes sense - I've never boarded a plane when the door to the cockpit was open - it's always been secured. I've only ever seen the flight crew after the plane has landed & is deboarding.
I suppose getting something into the captain's closet would be advantageous if one were up to no good. I guess it really is for security reasons (if this is in fact true).
That's just a horrible situation. I hope that the bride was still able to relax and enjoy her day in the second dress. I'm so glad that my gown doesn't have to endure any flights prewedding. Good luck to those of you who do. I would strongly recommend shipping it ahead, if you have the chance!
This has being very helpful!, thank you ladies, I'm taking my dress all the way from Chile to California and I think I’ll do the stick it into a carry on suitcase, I feel for that poor bride, what a horrible thing to happen, I can handle losing my bag a couple of times, but I’ll go crazy without the dress.
I just flew with my dress from NYC to CA on Continental, with my dress shoved into a garment bag. They didn't say anything when I didn't check it in, and at boarding, they even let me pre-board so that I can be guaranteed overhead luggage room. Just ask nicely =)
I have been going through the same dilemma for months now. I looked at garment bags, contacted the airlines, called wedding gown preservationist (to fold in into a box w/special tissue paper) to ship it. I just couldn't figure out what to do. The airlines policy (NWA) is on a "first come, first serve basis" you have the possibility of carrying your gown on and having it put in the captains closet. If the flight attendants are having a bad day, or if your too late because of other brides (going to Vegas) your or I should say I'm out of luck. I asked the chapel if I could ship my dress to them, they would not comply "they're not a dress holder". I called the hotel and I could only ship it to the bell hop station and put my future reservation number on the package, plus it would cost $100 just to ship per Fed Ex. And I'm not shipping my $1500 ball gown to a bell hop boy. (No offense, I just am not shipping it to someone I don't know, and I don't know will be there when I get there) So, my dress finally came in after ordering it in October, I laid my eyes on it and said "forget it!" I checked out the one way airline ticket for my dress and booked it for $150. I will put it in a suitcase on the way back.
In order to purchase another seat you put the first seat in your name, then you purchase an additional set (for the same price) in the name "extra seat". Then you have the airline link the two seats together, so they know it's yours, otherwise buying an "extra seat" is like having a blank check anyone can take, the seats must be linked together.
This is definately a stress releiver for me, I just know the morning of my flight without knowing for sure I could take it on I would have been a nervous wreck! Now because I did buy an extra seat, my gown gets checked luggage benefits! ha ha...I'll need it for as many things as I'm taking. Oh, by the way just a tip, I'm putting all my wedding essentials in my carry on luggage so I know everything gets there.
Congrats and good luck to everyone!!
that was a horrifying story. I'm so glad my dress doesn't really have to do any traveling!

From consumerist.com; Many people live far from their hometowns and from their families. Jenn is from the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and lives in Pennsylvania. She held her wedding in her hometown, and eight days before the wedding, she flew down to prepare. Her wedding gown didn't make it. Someone stole the gown out of her checked baggage.
