So I live in a city completely separate from my bride’s maids. 3 of 5 bride’s maids are moving to a new city within the next month (each a different city). Some of the maids will need alterations. I was going to call around find the cheapest price although I’m quicly finding that the cheapest may only be applicable if it includes alterations.
Has anyone had their bride’s maids order their dress on their own? What should I do?

I have heard that the bridesmaids should all order their dresses from the same shop (at the same time) so that their dresses will be made using the same "dye lots." It’s my understanding that otherwise, there is a risk that the dresses will not be exactly the same shade. Now, I don’t know how big of a risk that is, but we are ordering all of our dresses from the same shop to be as safe as possible.
Have you tried asking for some sort of discount since you will be ordering so many dresses? I have run across a few places that will do things like that. Good luck!

My bridesmaids all ordered from the same store, and then they are having their dresses shipped to them and they are getting their alterations done on their own, local to where they live.
Like linzella said, it is a good idea to order all of the dresses at the same time from the same shop, so that they all come off line together and are made from the same exact dye lot– meaning they’ll be the exact same color.
However, if you have BM in different places, once you’ve picked your dress, call around to different shops to get prices. You don’t necessarily have to order from the city you live in. Check shops in the cities where your BM live. They might have lower price. Its nice to pick a city where one of your BM lives because its nice to have SOMEONE near the shop (rather than randomly ordering from a store halfway across the country where no one lives) just in case you need them to physically go INTO the store at some point.

All of my bridesmaids ordered from the same shop but one. Depending on the color you are using, you may want to have them all order from the same shop or talk to the designer if you can about the variation in their dye lots. Fortunately I was using black, so it wasn’t a problem that they were ordered from different places at different times.

My maids were all over the place, so I just had them pick any David’s Bridal dress in the color "truffle." They each ordered their own, from different stores in different cities. It worked out fine.

As a BM, I’ve always ordered from a store near the bride (and I’ve never lived near the bride) and had it shipped to me. The bride sent us the dress information and store information, but we did the ordering. FYI, some stores will offer discounts and flat shipping rates if everyone orders there dress from the same place, so you might look into that. One friend got like $60 off if we ordered by a certain date, but we all had to order it to get the discount. Depending on how responsible your BM’s are, it might give you piece of mind to pick one store and have everyone order from there. That way you’ll be able to check and make sure everyone has ordered on time. Also, your BM’s can still go to a salon locally to ask about sizing info since bridal sizes are so wacky.
But for myself I’m going to do something more like rosychicklet and just pick a color and designer and let them order from wherever.

Are you planning on buying from a traditional bridal store or were you possibly thinking of ordering from somewhere online like J. Crew or Nordstrom?

My girls ordered their dresses online at different times and the colors matched perfectly. I knew there was a chance that they might not but I didn’t think the difference would be that noticeable. My girls lived in different states and cities so this worked out great for them. Bonus, that the dresses were under $80.
