I think in white/ivory it would be a beautiful simple wedding dress.
I think it's definitely bridal enough. And personally I love the pleating on the bodice. Very elegant.
I like them both. Go for it. I actually bought a prom dress that had the perfect shape and color. I wanted a colored dress. and those are hard to come by without taking a second mortgage. I didn't want a train either because I am having an outdoor wedding. It had some beading I didn't care for, but I got that off in a few hours with a carefully-weilded seam ripper.
I think this is a no brainer, get the dress! Its simply stunning and if you'll save some pennies on the dress then you can spend a bit more on those special added touches.....jewelry, a sash, great shoes, ect!! Love it, you've got my vote.
love the first one...not crazy about the second. love shilk shantung, too!!
Absolutely--go with what you love, and save your money for whatever else you want!
i love this idea (and those dresses). jenny yoo also makes bridesmaid dresses in white and i thought i might go that route at first because there was something so breathtakingly simple and dramatic about going the opposite of poofy. but of course, i poofed out, whoops!
you should also check out bridesmaid dresses by Jim Hjelm (spelling?), there are so many pretty ones that can easily become a wedding gown!
I think it's a great idea. And if it's what you love best then definitely go for it!
Originally, that was my plan too. But after going to bridal shops - it was not easy to find the dress I liked that also came in white (even though they were online, I could not find them in the store). Most of the bridesmaid options the stores carried did not come in white. So I ended up finding a simple bridal gown. I think that made my mom feel better too - just knowing that I was actually wearing a bridal gown and not a bridesmaid or prom dress. So my advice is 1. go for it - if you can find the dress you want in white or 2. there are many simple bridal gowns out there for less money too, so don't rule it out right away.
This was my wedding dress (in off white). I didn't do a train since I was outside, and it worked out beautifully!
Both of those dresses are beautiful, simple but elegant! I am doing the same, after I bought my dress in a bridal store I looked for it on the website but couldn't find it, because it's actually a prom dress! It is in blue on the website, but I ordered mine in Ivory. www.jadedaniels.com/prom/style1136.html
I think its a great idea, and I am actually considering it myself (as this is my 2nd wedding, and it will be in Vegas)
Good Luck !!
I don't think there is anything wrong with using a bridesmaid dress. If you love it and you feel like a bride in it then no one even has to know it wasn't a bridal dress.
I love my bridesmaid dresses so much that I'm actually getting the bridesmaid dress done in white and using that for my 2nd dress. We're having a 2nd receptions as the formal one will be too far for a lot of people to travel to.
The dress for my big day is a bridesmaids dress and I love it! I say if you love the dress then GO FOR IT!!!
oh I would love it!!! I wore a similar dress - the jcrew erica gown. It has the slighest sweep train and very simple like that.

lOVE THE FIRST ONE.....YOU COULD ADD A CRYSTAL BELT....AND IT WILL LOOK FABALOUS...BEST WISHES
I think it's a great idea. I loved the Jim Hjelm ones and almost wish I'd gone this route.
Another friend is getting married in a couple months and looked at Jenny Yoo. Unfortunately, she doubles the cost of her dresses if you want them in white/ivory.
I was going to, but then the bridal shop effed up my order (ordered a 10 because "Oh, we want it to fit around your hips") and it came in about four sizes too big. No amount of alterations can make that thing look good on me...so, a friend's making mine for me.
When my dress budget was cut big-time, I called the shop where I had selected my dress. I told the owner my budget had been cut, and she was really cool about it. She offered sample dresses 1/2 off, but she also suggested some bridesmaid dresses that could be done in cream, ivory or white. We played with accessories and idea on how to glam one of them up, and I really serously considered it. But I actually fell in love with one of the samples. However, I really thought the bridesmaid dress was beautiful, and I really liked the way the bridesmaid dress would have worked with my budget!
My friend did this -- she wore a David's Bridal bridesmaid dress in white to her wedding and looked great! I say go for it if you can still get the look you want!
I love the first one. Not so much the second dress, maybe too bridesmaid looking? Just my opion though.
I fell in love with the bell-shaped sleeves of the Coco Myles 3/4 Sleeve bodice (in Custom Dresses), so that's the dress I got - in white satin, with Pearl Ivy beading and an A-Line skirt. I loved it.
Go for it! I like the first one better, but go with what you like best. :-)
wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in, you'll be a bride that day no matter what you are wearing!
I love the idea and style! What does the fabric look like? If you end up buying it in off-white, please post a pic. :) Thanks.
I think this is such a great idea, especially for the bride on a budget (or in general if you don't believe in paying outrageous prices for something you'll wear once). Both of the dresses are beautiful!!
I personally really love the second one. But I think both are beautiful and would look just as beautiful as a wedding dress.
Heck, I've seen people buy summer dresses from old navy planning to wear that for their wedding dress. I think this dress is gorgeous and I say go for it.
These are my bm dresses- such a flattering style. I'm sure it would look great on you with the extra additions! I actually don't know why more brides don't think of this money-saving idea... good luck with your decision!
@bind9449: my jaw just dropped, I'm about to get measured tonight to order that same dress as my wedding dress! Any update? What did you end up choosing?
I'm totally going with the bridesmaid dress idea for my vow renewal. I would've done it for my wedding dress but four years ago they weren't making many bridesmaid dresses in ivory or white! I'll accessorize with a birdcage veil or a sparkly headband ... and perhaps a beaded or lacy bolero.
I say spend the money on more important things. At the end of the day it's just a dress. I wound up ordering two wedding gowns because I gained ten pounds, omg.
i was thinking of getting that wtoo 451 that someone posted above.
i ended up getting this bill levkoff dress in ivory satin. it was only 240 bux and i swear it looks nicer than the $3k dresses that i tried on.
id like to add a sash or some flowers on the side, but do you think it is angled wrong for that?

@sweetcarrie: I think flowers on the side could easily be added - it would look similar to this dress, which I considered for my wedding dress.

I dug up this old post because I remembered posting here about my grand plans to order a bridesmaid dress as my wedding dress. It worked out better than I thought - I'm pretty short, so my tailor was able to hem only the front and leave me with a little train. The dress cost $225, alterations were $160 (that drove me crazy, but I hear it's less than typical bridal gown alterations), and dry cleaning a whopping $35.
Anybody on the fence: DO THIS. I got some random rude comments, but I'm happy about the amount of money I spent on a dress I wore for 7 hours.

@Mrs.Oat: You looked lovely in your dress! Anyone ridiculous enough to make rude comments is def not worth worrying about :)
I find myself leaning towards simpler gowns, and often look at wedding dresses and think "that would be great IF it had less... stuff." Checking out BM options is a good idea :)

has anyone done this before? there is a wtoo dress in shantung that i really like. i can pay extra to have length added to it, and perhaps add a sash with crystals or a flower. i'm not big on trains, so a puddle train might work out since i'm petite anyway. i just don't know if it's bridal-y enough. what do you think?
here it is in pewter,
I'd get it in off white. here is the link if it doesn't work http://www.watters.com/product.php?coll=wtoo&showid=2571
