I was a bridesmaid and had to order my dress through HoB. Although the process wasn't quite as awful as some of the Yelp reviewers', it was slow and difficult to do it all over the phone. When the dress arrived, the sizing was totally wonky (even though all of my measurements stayed exactly the same) and major alterations were necessary. Unfortunately, this happened to all eight of the bridesmaids and it was a race against the clock to get everything fitting correctly.
One of my friends ordered her gorgeous bridesmaid dresses through Bella Bridesmaid & they had a great time picking them out and customizing dresses to fit each lady's style. Their dresses ended up being pricey, but they work with different designers and fabrics...maybe they could suggest more inexpensive style? I haven't been there, but the gals I know gave rave reviews : )
If you're interested in local designers (love it), check out Amanda Archer (http://www.etsy.com/shop/amandaarcher?page=1&order=price_asc) and Elise Bergman (http://www.elisebergman.com/bridesmaids.htm & her designs can be found at Roslyn on Damen in Bucktown) ...both are quality designers who make fashionable dresses that can seriously be worn again & again.
Holy crap, I wrote a novel. GOOD LUCK! Let us know how it goes! :)
I have heard of both good and bad experiences at Hob. I looked at HOB for my wedding gown and was not impressed on how I was (or lack there of) helped. On the positive side, you can go there and try dresses on without being harassed. Davids is the same way, you can try as many dresses on as you want. In the weddings I have been in, the brides used J.Crew and Davids. The negative of J. crew is that you have to find a tailor. The dress itself was around $200 plus $60 for alterations. Davids dress came in on time and as ordered. The only issue I had was with the alterations department at Davids. They took a long time, had major attitudes, and it was pricey. I have not ordered my BM dresses yet, but plan to you the shop I purchased my dress. They offer 15% off if the brides dress was purchased there, that makes the dress I like, about the same price as it costs at HOB. (without the HOB hassle)
Thanks to you both! I am thinking we will go to HOB to try on the dresses and then order through Netbride, which has lots of positive reviews. I might try Bella too ... I just hate having the dress be so pricey.
I bought my MOH's dress at Le Dress in Bucktown/Wicker Park....it's on Division.
I was recently in a wedding where we tried on a bunch of dresses at HOB, and also at Cenzina's in Glenview. It's a small store, but we specifically went to Cenzina's because they carried the whole line of Alfred Sung's recent collection, which is really reasonbly priced. No one else in Chicagoland carried as many of the styles as they did. Once we figured out which styles we all wanted, we ordered from Netbride, and it was awesome. The dresses that are normally about $150 were about $110.
Also, Gigi's Closet is about 2 mns away from Cenzina's, and they also have a very wide selection. So you could go to 2 stores probably within one hour if you're efficient :)
Oh--and if you end up going the JCrew route, I have a NWT "Nathalie" dress in deep persimmon that I'm trying to sell, in a size 2. It's totally gorgeous, but the bride whose wedding I bought it for changed her mind about letting us pick an orange dress of our choosing :) It's probably a long shot, but let me know if you're interested!
The dress is beautiful, unfortunately, I want a long dress and I am pretty sure none of my bridesmaids are a size two. Good luck!
Definitely check out Bella Bridesmaid on Oak. The girls are so sweet and helpful and they have a lot of beautiful options. I actually found my bridal alternative and bridesmaids dress there!
I got my bridesmaid dresses from HoB on Franklin Street. I was hesitant to go here because of the reviews on Yelp. To my surprise, it was a great experience. We worked with Vanessa - and I cannot recommend her enough! The girl knows her bridesmaid dresses and will work with you to get you what you're looking for. We were there twice, and she was awesome both times. She remembered everything we had saved after the first time, and had it waiting for us the second time. The dresses at House of Brides are reasonable, too. I didn't want my bridesmaids to have to pay over $200 for a dress, so she came down on some of the prices - and told me that if I find the dresses somewhere else for cheaper (online), print it out and bring it in and they will match the lower price.
The dressing rooms are huge and private - which made trying on the huge dresses that much easier. And the girls at the front desk were friendly.
it's a little far out there, but I got my dress and bridesmaids dresses from "the dress" in wheaton - great selection, great customer service and great price (180 for floor length).
@AnnLizDee: its suzanne from high school - I about died when I saw your photo - random! you look great in the dress - save it for someone elses wedding!

Hi Bees,
Looking for suggestions on where to shop for bridesmaid dresses. I am pretty impressed with house of brides online selection and pricing, but not sure if we can actually go in and try things on? Also, the reviews on yelp are horrendous. I obviously don't want to blind buy on this one.
My colors are autumn-ish orangey reds and so I need to see the color in person. I am ok with trying things on some place and then ordering from somewhere cheaper. One of my bridesmaids lives in NYC and offered to price the dresses from RK bridal, where she got hers.
Bella Bridesmaid looks pricey and kind of snobby. I am willing to go to the suburbs, but not too far out. I live in the city as do 2 of my other maids. The rest live out of town. I bought my dress from Macy's on State Street and their bridesmaid collection is ridiculously overpriced. I'm probably going to try David's bridal too.
Anything you can think of would be helpful. Thanks!
