The length of dress is usually dictated by the formality of the event. However if you are going to be taking extensive pictures outside, you may want to take your bridesmaids feelings into account as far as length. After all, just because you have to suffer in a long dress, doesn't necessarily mean you have to make your bridesmaids suffer, too.
If you want long, do long. Plain and simple. This is YOUR wedding.
With that said and comfort in mind, July probably warrants a short dress. What state is the wedding in? How much will you be outside (outdoor reception?)?
mandalynn17: haha, Sorry, I didn't mean it to come out like that. I'm not complaining that I have to "suffer", so they should to. I'm just saying that lots of people wear long dresses because they're more formal, so the weather shouldn't be a determining factor.
Miss Lab: My wedding is in Ontario, just north of Toronto. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the weather here, but it becomes pretty humid in the summer (although the tempeature hovers around 25 C). We will only be outside for about 1 - 1.5 hours for pictures. The rest of the time we will be indoors, with A/C.
Oh, and I'm trying to be easy-going because after all they are paying for the dresses and they do have to wear them. I will have the ultimate last call on which dress they wear though. :)
Our wedding is pretty formal, but I did not want them to wear long dresses...esp in August heat. My mom hates it, but I let them choose whatever shorter length they want (tea or cocktail).
Since my dress has a high low hemline, I also had this question. I ended up letting the girls pick whatever dress they wanted because it was a casual affair (so far one has a floor length and another has a tea length- and they look great together!). J.Crew Wedding offers some of their dresses in both long and short lengths, so that could be an option incase you don't want to have to chose (just let your BMs pick!)

I have some bridesmaids who want short dresses, and some who want long. My wedding will be in July of next year, so it will be hot outside (our wedding is indoors; the pictures are going to be outside). However, long dresses are more formal (I'm wearing one for goodness sake!), so I don't see why the weather should make a difference. But I want to be sure I'm not offending anyone, so please help me make this decision! I am going to let them pick out a dress they all like, but if they are going to be indecisive then I will have to put my foot down!
