Hi all!  So I'm a bridesmaid for a good friend this weekend (yes, as in 3 days from now) and it just occured to me to ask her about what she wanted us to do with our hair.  I guess I was hoping the answer would either be "wear it down" or "we're bringing someone in to do it" (not that I'd assumed she'd pay for everyone to have it done, but that there'd be someone we'd have the option of paying to do ours?  Yeah, I just hadn't thought this through is what it boils down to...)  Anyway, just found it she wants at least partial updos, and everybody's getting ready together and pretty much doing their own hair.  We'll be helping each other, but I want to make sure the talented people have plenty of time to focus on the bride.

So I need help figuring out what kind of classy looking updo/semi updo I can do with my arrow strait, almost waist length hair!  As a forewarning, I am completely hairstyle deficient!  I have to have my hair back (and usually under some kind of protective gear) all day for my job, so I don't do anything to it, ever.  I don't own pomade, a curling iron, hairspray, a crimper, mousse - nothing!  I can get some, of course, but the point is that I'll have no idea how to use it, and I'm just trying to give you an idea of how much hair expertise I have.  So does anyone have any suggestions for relatively easy to DIY styles for long strait hair?

    Thanks, bees!

I'd definitely ask the other girls for their help.  If you don't have the tools (or the hands!) to do your own hair, then I think it's a little late to start now.  You should definitely check out you tube and other sites for tutorials though, as some hairstyles are way easier than you might think.  I hope it works out!!

I'm thinking like a fancy ponytail.  Maybe a curly low side ponytail?  Any serious updo would be hard to do with hair as long as yours.

Just to clarify, the other girls are bringing tools, so I'll have things like curling irons and mousse available to me, I was just trying to emphasize that I don't usually use them on a routine basis.

Your hair is so long (my mom has hair that long!) it's a challenge to get it up unless you knot your hair up--my SIL had to do that with my mom and it DEFINITELY takes a professional. It's tricky.

I'm going to suggest a very large low necked bun. Maybe braid it first, then just wrap, wrap, wrap, then pin the crap out of it. It looks great with her side part and it'll look full with your long hair.

@Chicat - I just meant that if you don't have anything to practice beforehand, it can be hard (even for those that are alright with doing hair) to create an updo offhand!  Personally I find it especially hard when you have a lot of hair.  I think some of the ideas above seem good.  Do you know the other bridesmaids very well?

@ejs4y8 Thanks!  I was actually thinking of something like that when I stumbled across this tutorial:http://ruffledblog.com/2008/10/how-to-make-a-side-chignon/

And wow! That lady has wicked long hair!  I've grown my hair out long, but it's a personal rule not to let it go past my waist.  No offense to anyone who wears it that way, but to me there are enough things to worry about in life without constantly trying to avoid sitting on your hair (or worse making sure it doesn't fall into the toilet!)

For those pics I just posted, it would help if your hair had a little wave to it. Maybe you could wash it the night before and then braid it while wet and let it dry for a day. Not tiny braids, that would cause kinky waves. Just two big but tight braids would work.

If not, maybe you could use hot rollers.

I agree with everyone else. Just do a ponytail, you can go buy a fancy clip or something to make it more special. My hair is baby fine and straight, it won't even hold a curl. Since you don't know how your hair will react with stuff, you might not want to bother with it. You could just wind up wasting time and energy on something that won't even make it through the ceremony. Another option would be to get a haircut the day of the wedding, It's risky, but your stylist would be able to fix your hair up and style it for you. (Don't tell her to pin it up or anything, she might charge you extra for an updo) Hope all goes well, you should post a picture!

You could do a reverse ponytail, its an upgrade to a regular ponytail to make it more sophisticated and interesting. here's a link from youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJW1aKcgFX4

I would suggest what danadelphia suggested and have waves in your hair by braiding it the night before after you shower. Also, you should probably use a hair tie that is the same color as you hair so it doesn't stand out so much, or find a decorative one to mask the hair tie that you use to hold you hair together. Good Luck!! I also want to see what you choose to do, please post some pics when you can!!
