We haven’t officially started planning our wedding yet, but I’ve already started doing a little research and gathering up ideas. I’m thinking of having a more intimate wedding in my parents back yard. Just close family and friends. A simple ceremony and then a nice laid back dinner.
I really want a dress that matches the feel of the day. Just from what I’ve seen online, it looks like it might be difficult to find a wedding dress that doesn’t have a train and isn’t completely covered in lace or bling (a bit of an exageration but you get my point). A friend of mine mentioned the idea of getting a bridesmaid dress and ordering it in ivory or a blush pink. Has anyone ever done this? If so how did it turn out? Did you have any regrets?
If not a bridesmaid dress, anyone got an idea of any nice alternatives to the traditional, fancy wedding ball gown? If you have pictures feel free to post them!!

Informal wedding gowns are the name for the type of dress you’re describing. Lots of wedding dress designers have them. They’re less expensive than the regular bridal gowns, and they tend to have no train or just a small train.
Venus bridal and Impression bridal have some of my favorite informal dresses. You can see them on their respective websites at Venusbridal.com and Impressionbridal.com. If you want to see the price ranges for these dresses, you can see them at weddingshoppeinc.com and bestbridalprices.com; you can also buy the dresses from both of those sites. Mori Lee has the Voyage collection; you might want to check those dresses out as well. You can find them on both of the sites I just mentioned.
Google “Informal wedding gowns” for other collections. There are a lot of great options out there.

I think it’s completely fine if you find a bridesmaids dress that you like in the color you want. Also, don’t rule out looking at non-wedding dresses in department stores too!

My best friend bought an off the rack bridesmaid dress from David’s Bridal in white for her Las Vegas wedding. It cost her $99, and she loved it. To this day (married 5 years) she still thinks it was the best decision.

My partner bought bridesmaid dress for our October wedding as she was looking for something very similar to what you’ve described. I won’t be seeing it until the day of, but I know she will be gorgeous! I believe she ordered an Alfred Angelo bridesmaid dress if that helps.

emstar168: +1 about department stores
You can find a white/ivory/blush dress just about anywhere. I’d suggest Anthropologie, J. Crew, White House Black Market, Nordstrom, Asos.com, even prom dress stores like Windsor. It just depends on your style (I wanted to go this route but wanted a very specific look), but there’s lots of options out there! Good luck!

I second the J.Crew idea as well as BHLDN – Anthropologie’s bridal line. I’m having a relaxed outdoor ceremony and reception and got my dress from J. Crew.
Good luck find the perfect dress for you!

I never would have thought to look at department stores or any of those stores @emstar168 listed. Thanks so much for the advice!

My friend wore a Kelsey Rose bridesmaid dress in ivory, it was beautiful! Nobody knew it was a bridesmaids dress, I myself didn’t until I started working in the shop where she got it. It was an amazing price and a beautiful dress!

EH125: Not sure the color/style your going for or your budget. But these dresses IMO could double as a wedding dress. And some of these come in different colors. Oh, and Btw these are all prom dresses. Good Luck.

EH125: I bought a dress that I didn’t wear from BHLDN. I was almost 40 when I married, but also the only daughter. I bought the sample dress for $500, and it immediately got nixed by my familt and BMs for it not being ‘bridal’ enough! But, I do love it. I’ve offered it to other brides, for *free,* but none have bitten. Google BHLDN ‘crepe de chine’ for more pics. It’s Lovely! My only request if I send it to you is that if you don’t like it for whatever reason, you pay the postage to send it back to me. I bought this dress with the plan of wearing it, and was so happy! I just don’t want someone to not wear it and sell it to make money. It’s in great condition, and had no alterations. I can’t recall, but it’s either an 8 or a 10. But, it was a sample, and the bottom is quite dirty from gals trying it on. It does need to be cleaned. PM me if you’re interested and I will send you pics of the actual dress hanging in my closet. 🙂 No offense taken if it’s not your style. 🙂
If you’re wondering the free ‘catch’ : I don’t feel right about selling it because I wouldn’t know what to ask for. I got it over 50% off, but it also needs to be cleaned from gals tring it on. I wouldn’t feel right about it! BTW, it’s cream colored, and that bottom band is a beautiful peach color.

Target has a line of wedding apparel online. Very simple and understated.

EH125: There are so many cocktail and evening dresses out there these days in white/ivory/silver/gold/etc that could work as well. I’d start with Nordstrom’s website and work from there.
