You might look at Nordstrom online - they have a lot of yellow dresses this season. Nothing exactly like the JCrew. I also liked a few of their dresses this season, but no way I am paying over $300 for something made of cotton. My best suggestion, if you really like this exact dress, is to talk to a seamstress. This would be a very simple dress to make, and a nice, yellow cotton of good quality shouldn't be difficult to find either.
hey suzanno - thanks for the reply! yeah, that price is jcrew-ridiculousness. i should have mentioned that the color we would want is actually navy, not yellow. (not that this matters really) it sounds like the seamstress option may be the most sensible!
Go online to Nordstrom.com, Womens, Dress Shop, and then choose a category (Bridesmaids or Cocktail) and then you can search by color (blue) and there are pages of them. Bloomies has a great dress shop, but not online.
try target... they have a lot of great party dresses, and almost all are under $75... we went with a nice navy blue dress that wasn't too shiny, for $50...
maybe something like this? http://www.target.com/Isaac-Mizrahi-Target-Taffeta-Tailored/dp/B000YJC9ZG/qid=1206817685/ref=br_1_7/602-7114140-9127041?ie=UTF8&node=144457011&frombrowse=1&rh=tgt%5F2%3ABlue&page=1
it says it's taffeta, but it also says it's twill taffeta, so that makes me think it's not vey shiny... you can easily return anything you buy online to the store, so maybe it's worth a shot??
Nordstrom has a couple of really cute Nicole Miller dresses in navy in a simple sheath or halter design, but they both seem to be satin, which is not what you want.
The JCrew cotton actually is a mercerized cotton, which has a very shiny finish, so maybe that's not actually what you want either. Depending upon when your wedding is, you may have time to wait for the JCrew dress to go on sale? Also there may be more selections in navy available later in the summer, when the fall dresses come out.
Check out Etsy for custom dress-makers.
This site I stumbled across when I was looking for BMs dresses http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5315387
Her site says she can make any of the styles to fit, in a fabric of your choosing and the most expensive is only $140 (most are around $70) and the shapes look similar to your pictures. Good Luck!
PS- you could always tell the maids they can choose whatever they want and leave the searching up to them!!
you know that's a good point.. this is a tad embarrasing, but the wedding is in november and there are only 2 girls that need dresses! maybe i just need to exercise a little patience and shop those sales.
i LOVE the sheath dress though! maybe the *right* shiny dress would be ok haha.. i also love the target one....especially the price!
the etsy option could be good too. you're right about asking them to find themselves. :D
here's a jim hjelm BM dress in matte taffeta:

Have you thought about David's Bridal? They are all over and have the fabrics you are looking for. Dresses run between $120 - $160.

my style, and perhaps more importantly, my two lovely bridesmaids' styles, are in line with this kind of cut and especially this kind of fabric.
however, the cost of this dress gives me a sad feeling in my stomach..
are there any shops online that sell this kind of thing that I can point them too?? (we are in 3 different states...)
it seems like a lot of people do the Waters thing or whatnot, but i don't want to see any silk, taffeta, satin, etc. nothing remotely shiny.
thank you in advance for any help offered!!
