I don’t think it would be terrible at all! I’m going to be a bridesmaid in two of my best friends’ weddings this coming year and already have one under my belt. My belief is that this is your special day! I know I told my friends they could stick me in the ugliest outfit they could find and I’d still be excited to stand next to them on their day! haha But I think ballet flats would look lovely with knee-length dresses! Also, one thing you need to consider with heels is sinking into the grass. They might have to shift their weight around to avoid slowly sinking and the heels could get dirty/ruined. If they’d really like to wear heels they can always change for the reception or they could also wear wedges which would look springy/summery and would solve the sinking issue 🙂 Good luck with your wedding planning and congratulations!

Buy them the heel cover things from amazon which tye can slip on their heels so they don’t sink!

I think it’s a great idea, good luck. Also maybe let them wear wedges and possibly a heel that doesn’t sink, like a square. Do you have any in the bridal party that always wear heels?

I’ve asked my girls not to go over 2 inches for similar reasons. I am facing a battle with one of them who keeps sending me pictures of shoes that are 4 inches and higher. I know I can just put my foot down and say no but I just wish she’d stop sending me picture of shoes that I know are going to be awkward and that I know she will be complaining about whe it comes time to dance.

Not sure if your tall bridesmaids will feel the same, but my sister was stoked I chose flats all round… her response was “oh good cos I don’t want to look like a giant next to you short people”.

I had a vision of tripping on an uneven bit of grass walking down the aisle.

Plus added bonus we know we can dance all night in them! x

They will probably appreciate not having sore feet all night!  I think flats are cute!  And IMO it would look weird if you are in flats and they are in heels.

@idolina: I would try and approach each of your bridesmaids seperately for the ones that you don’t know what their preference is. This would give you a chance to hear their thoughts and to share your ideas and reasoning with them 🙂

The reason I think this approach is better is it’s much better to have these discussions one on one that in a group or via a group email.

FYI I would have loved flats when I was a bridesmaid. I was taller than the bridemaids and bride by a good 6 inches and one the BM’s decided that 3&1/2 inch stillettos would be perfect for a garden wedding :/ So not only did I tower over the bride I spent the whole ceremony trying not to sink into the very wet ground, unsuccesfully, once the heel went in I stayed there and relaxed..just happy the grass was really long!
