Bring my dress home today or have the bridal shop store it until wedding?

My dress came in yesterday and I'm planning to go try it on today. The store I bought it from offers to store dresses until closer to your wedding day at no cost - should I have them store it or should I bring it home today? Also, did you store your dress hanging up or laying flat in a garment bag?

    Reasons to bring it home:

    1. Having the dress would help me decide on any jewelry/accessory choices.

    2. Having the dress would help in trying to find the right undergarments to wear under it.

    3. I could try it on/show friends & family whenever I want :)

Reasons to have them store it:

    1. I don't have to worry about anything happening to it.

    2. Save space in what has become "the wedding closet".

We have had two store close here and disappear with dresses and after that store in Chicago burned down, I wouldn't let mine out of sight.

I had my bridal shop keep the dress until several days before the wedding.  I didn't have much room in my closet and I was paranoid about something happening to it!

Once I had it, I stored it hanging up in the garment bag.

Something can happen to the dress anywhere- At the store or at home. Whichever seems more convienent for you.

I'm glad you've asked this. The shop I'm getting my dress from charge £5 a week for me to keep it there as apparently the insurance is very expensive, but I probably will get them to keep it so I know nothing can happen to it but if it does it's then their responsibility to get me another.

I brought mine to a store to have it held, just because I live in a small grad school apartment, so any cooking smells from my dinners or my neighbors could filter in. And even with the fire that happened in Chicago, I'm more afraid of one of my neighbors or myself burning the apartments than the chances of the store going up.

I agree with tksjewelry, there have been too many shops go out of business lately so I would rather know my dress was in safe hands. Though, I dont trust myself to have my dress in the house when I get it. I can guarantee that I'll be one of those brides who wears it constantly. I will more than likely keep it with my aunt who has a closet the size of my spare bedroom. =)

I'd say bring it home and keep it in your house. Your 3 reasons are good enough for me. And also, I second tksjewelry.

We have animals and limited space so I loved having mine at the shop till the wedding! Plus, they steamed it right before the wedding. AND I wasn't tempted to show it to anyone or worried my then FI would find it.

I compromised and left my dress at my future mother-in-law's place.  Far enough away that I won't try it on every other day, but near enough I can bring jewelry/shoes/etc to test out with it.  Plus, she has a spare bedroom with an extra closet, so the space is not an issue for her.  And I know she'll take care of it and won't go out of business and skip town!

I have animals and limited space as well, and my bridal shop doesn't offer storage, so I am leaving my dress at my FMIL's house. She doesn't have animals and I think that's the safest place for it. And I also have access to it at any time because she lives nearby.

Maybe you can do something like that?

I'm leaving it at the bridal shop - it's close enough that I can stop by and test out accessories with it or anything like that.  I don't have nearly enough room for a wedding gown at my apartment - and I don't want the mister seeing it!!

Lisamr    July 31, 2011   Live in Florida Wedding in Long Island, NY where I am from.

I left my gown at Davids Bridal. The are holding it there until alterrations in Jan. Then the alterations department will hold it until they are done and then ship it to NY to be held by my mom. I did not want my dress here in my home in Florida. I was scared something would happen to it with all the animals here. I just got home an hour ago and in my bedroom was a centipede. I would freak out if that was on my dress bag.
