Are you leaving for your honeymoon right after the wedding?  If so, you aren’t going to have the marriage certificate back by then.

@maybride2011: We didn’t receive our marriage license until about a week after the wedding. I’ve never heard of bringing your marriage license on your honeymoon before.

when i was at Couples Negril they asked to see our marriage certificate and we got a free massage and bottle of champagne.  lucky we had it because had just gotten married at a different resort in Jamaica.  but we definitely would not have gotten our honeymoon perks without the certificate!

I know for us we won’t get it back until sometime after the wedding the church sends it in to the state.

We had our marriage license at our ceremony. Our officiant signed it and then we made a copy of it the next day at my in laws house. Thats what we brought on our honeymoon.

Well, you need to make sure you have the right documentation in mind. Here in Ohio, we give people the license and a marriage certificate that are just keepsakes. you have those in hand and the officiant fills out that particular marriage certificate and returns it to you. There is another piece of paper that is returned to the marriage licensing department to put on record that the marriage took place. Once that is on record, people are able to get a certified marriage abstract, which is the legal proof that two people are married and that is one would use to change her last name. I work in marriage licensing here and that is just how we do things, so you would actually be able to take the marriage certificate, but you may want to check in the state where you live.

Yes that is correct. Most hotels will require a copy of your marriage license to honor the honeymoon amenities or upgrades.

We couldn’t get our marriage certificate until almost a month after our wedding because it had to go through processing at the department downtown and then get mailed to us.  There was no way we could have had it on our honeymoon.

We had to. We just told our minister about it beforehand and she made us an extra copy.
