So my fiance and I have spent quite a bit of time making our budget and we have done everything we can to make sure we get a wedding we want while keeping it under our budget.  However, I just started dress shopping and I have fallen in love with a dress that is twice what we had budgeted for my gown.  My fiance is so sweet and understanding and has told me to get it.  But I have split minds about it...I think of all the other things this money could go towards instead of towards a dress I'll wear for 5 hours.  But then again...it is a once in a lifetime moment and the pictures and dress will be there.

What should I pick?  Practical or dream dress?

@JoandJade:  I think if you would be in credit card debt because of it, budget dress. If you can afford it, it was just more than you had planned (but the cash is available) then follow your heart.

Can you post a pic your dream dress and budget dress if you have any pictures. Also can you tell us the price of the dream dress and how much you are over budget? If it is only a few hundred dollars i say cut in other areas of your budget. If the dress is 1000's over budget i think you should try to find a cheaper dress.

I voted budget, but only because I think you can find a dress you'll fall in love with that is closer to what you want to pay.

As a budget bride myself, I know what you are struggling with! Buying a dress "off the floor" from a bridal shop is a great way to get a steep discount (that's how I got mine), and another is buying pre-owned from someone off of Craigslist or something.

Just make sure you try it on first! online shopping is risky.

so keep looking, shop around, and if in another month or so you haven't found anything and you still can't get that first dress out of your mind, well, if you can re-arrange your budget and cut out some other things, then get it.

for me its this question, if you get a budget dress will you in a month time, a year time when you look at photos be thinking about the dream dress

if your FI supports the change in the budget and you can make it happen then i vote do it

It's kind of hard to say because everyone's financial situation is so different. Are there other areas where you can cut? That way you can get your dream dress without feeling bad about it. I tend to side on the splurge side, though. :)

My dream dress is 1100, without alterations.  It's the Alfred Angelo Fairy Tale Series, style 204.  Last year's model of "Tiana".  It's amazing!!  I saw it and it just made me gasp.  I don't have a comparison budget dress because I haven't found one in budget that I've liked enough to consider.  But my budget was originally $500-600.

We wouldn't be dealing with credit cards since we decided when we started it would be all cash but the cash could go towards other things :-(

We will be moving in together after the wedding so that's like almost 2/3 of a month's rent difference.

I pick budget dress but I will always pick budget option no matter what in a situation like this....I am a frugal person. Plus DOUBLE your budget is pretty extreme. How much money are we talking here? If your budget is $200 and you are paying $400...no big deal. If you budget is $1500 and you found a dress for $3000....that is crazy...

@JoandJade:  Like PP said, seriously consider buying used. I bought my dress used for 500, and the seller paid 1200 + alterations for it. I avoided needing to have the dress hemmed and taken in (except for the bust needs a slight adjustment) so I saved A LOT. And the dress retails now for 1500-2000. Heres a pic if you're interested.

Remember that this is how it fit, out of the box, before alterations. All it needs is to be taken in a tad at the bust, whereas if I bought it new I definately would have needed it hemmed (I'm 5'3"), which can be over $100 as well as probably still having the bust and waist taken it.

I voted for Dream Dress, but I think you should look for it used first

you might find your budget dress is your dream dress, just keep looking and here in australia there is website called wedding dress express and they have amazing formal dresses in there ready to wear which you can get in white and they look just like a wedding dress but only around $300 , i was thinking about that option in the begining for mine ,

@JoandJade:  I am wearing the Tiana gown for my wedding and I have yet to find something similar. Could you possibly go with one of the replica sites? I'd be glad to send you the photos I have of me in the dress if you need some more pictures besides the ones on the AA site to send to them.

I would have voted for both if I could....there are sooo many pre-owned dresses out there! There is a site preownedweddingdress.com that you might find useful...and not all on there are used...some girls buy dresses then keep looking (a big no no) and find something else that fits better and are stuck with two dresses! I was in the exact same situation as you...I found my dream dress that was like no other out there! But it was more then double our budget...it was $2000, and we were kinda stretching it for $1000 but I was still trying to justify spending the $2000 since it was my dream dress....luckily for me it was discontinued and I found it on ebay from a bridal salon! I got my dream dress for less then our budget $540!!!! It was fate....so I would try looking on ebay, and the site I mentioned! Good luck

I would keep looking for a similar dress if it's really out of your budget. Several people have bought them used, and I personally wouldn't go that route but if could be a good savings for you. It really depends on what you think. Everyone's finances are different. If I set a $500 budget for myself because I just didn't think it was worth it to spend more, but found a dress for $1000 that I loved I'd probably buy it. That being said, I set my budget for $2000, and would have maybe gone a little over, but wouldn't have gone up 1 or even 2k.

I actually shopped without looking at pricing (bad, I know, but the prices weren't listed on the gowns...irritating!) and luckily the dress I fell in love with came in $500 under budget.
