I am having a buffet style reception. We are going to make the food ourselves. My main concern is how to get the food set up after the ceremony, and how to keep the food items full, such as the crackers and chips for certain dips. We are also planning to have self serve drinks...is this cheesy? thanks for the advice!

Get some friends or family to do this. Or hire cheap workers, maybe craigslist? It will be hard to keep all this full while entertaining and chatting with guests. Besides, it's your wedding...that's a lot of work to put on yourself when you should be enjoying!

Self serve drinks is OK, I guess do you mean water, milk, etc? If you mean soda I would just do cans. Alchohol again is a little difficult to do self serve if you're thinking mixed drinks, cans of beer would be easy.

Enlist a large group of friends/family and give them specific tasks.  You'll also want a couple point people (so that the others will have someone who knows what goes where, etc) and those people should also be good at managing things.  Depending on how many guests you are planning for, this shouldn't be difficult.  Many hands make light work!

I don't think self-serve drinks is cheesy - what are you planning to serve for both food and drinks?

@Carpie: We are having less than 50 guests.I didnt want to ask family/friends to help out with the food, because I want them to enjoy the wedding, not be working for it. I had thought about hiring someone to set up the food and keep it full. But I have no idea how to go about doing this, and how much money would be sufficient to pay someone. For the self serve drinks I was thinking, cans of beer, wine, champagne, soda.

@aechic914: You could pay someone by the hour, depending on where you live, I think $10-12/hour is fair.  Hiring just a couple of people should keep it fairly inexpensive.
