Jayceedee:  go for the top dark one!  Especially for a dining room.

If  you want a darker finish, I would  buy the buffet in a finish you love and strip and stain your current table darker to match.

Jayceedee:  I love mixed woods so I think you could go with that darker one and it woudl blend in nicely with your light table.

julies1949:  I was going to recommended restraining the current dining table too!

Jayceedee:  you’ll be amazed how sanding back and restaining (in your preferred darker colour) will completely change the look and feel of a piece of furniture. It’s relatively cheap and means you can get a buffet in the colour you want and still have everything match!

Have you considered buying one second hand and painting it maybe cream, grey, or a fun color to match your home?

Jayceedee:  It’s not hard, but it can be tedious. You have a choice of stripping mediums. Some are quite harsh and should be done outside with good ventilation.

Basically, you strip off the old finish (there are sites onine that help you decide if it is varnish or shellac), sand, stain and then seal with a clear sealer of your preference-varnish, shellac, polyurethane etc.
