Not me!! He's totally scared of them too, but his need to feel manly wins out every time! :-)
I agree with Layla...I don't squish, and when he gives me a hard time about it...I just remind him it was one of the qualities I married him for :)
I have absolutely no problems squishing bugs. It's a tough world out there; squish or be squished. :P
Haha...am I the only mighty spider killer? I guess that happens when you grow up with three sisters in an old house!
I'll squish ants...and I'll spray wasp. BUT in no way shape or form will I go near a spider.
I will squash them ... but FH usually takes care of it because he believes in humane treatment of bugs - he catches and releases them outside.
lol go Minutiae!
And that's very humane, mini! I like that, but I don't like spiders, so if Mr. Sew did catch and release, he'd have to walk that spider 10 blocks away from me!
Neither. Unless it's an unmanageable horde of ants or a cockroach/fly (because they are SO dirty, ew) I simply scoop up in paper/a cup and throw outside. I do this for spiders, bees, beetles, etc. No need to kill them if they're harmless, they just got lost and found themselves somewhere nice and warm. I've convinced FI to do the same.
Oh geez. Don't even get me started on this. H hates killing ANYTHING because he thinks it's inhumane and he will try to take it outside. Of course he will fail at catching it (because bugs are faster than him) and then the bug will crawl into some unreachable space. And then he shrugs "oh well, I tried." Meanwhile I am hysterical. I would say that this is probably the #1 cause of fights in our relationship!!
once upon a time I agreed with you veganglam...the the attack happened :(
In one year both my small, inside dog and I were bitten by spiders. The dog's was the worst! She almost lost her foot due to it. I turned on them pretty quickly then :)
I usually just let spiders be and neither of us kill them (unless it's REALLY big, then I have hubby do it), and if he's around, I'll have him squish the roaches cause I'd rather not... If he isn't here, I will, but it gets me all panic-y feeling and ugh. I hate them... haven't seen them much lately though. Oh the joys of NYC living...
@vegan - i wish i had the fortitude to do that!
@hello - uggh! I know what you mean! mr. sew "missed" the spider once and it landed IN MY BED. And then we couldn't find it. needless to say I didn't sleep there for a good week!
We don't have any poisonous/dangerous spiders where I live...if we did, I would probably figure out what they look like and kill accordingly. Fortunately I doubt I'll have to worry about that at any point (I don't think evil spiders are too common in New York City, where we'll move, hopefully, for grad school?). I've received a few minor spider bites, which were ugly and itchy, but nothing that really hurt anything. Our spiders are pretty lame 'round these parts.
I was always the girl who played with bugs as a kid, so they really don't bother me for the most part, unless they're getting into my food sources or are known to regularly carry diseases.
I normally call the FH and he comes running to the rescue!! Every once in a while I have to be brave, though... which is scary!!!
FI is rarely home, and I can't usually wait for him. So I put on gloves,( and shoes, in case it ends up the floor and I need fast-stomping action), shake uncontrollably, scream profanities, cry a bit, and then smack it with something. I immediately call FI to tell him all about it, typically lying about the size, speed and thickness of legs to make him feel bad about not saving me!!! I also avoid that area of the house for at least 2 days until I forget about it.
@ veganglam - you have a very good point about the different types in different locations. And yes I think you'll have more roaches and rats in NYC than black widows :)
@VirginiaMarie - that sounds much like my mom's approach before she moved to using the vacuum cleaner and then leaving said vacuum cleaner on the front porch until dad gets home to empty it.
@virginia - way to be brave!
i grew up with widows, and my aunt got really sick once from a brown recluse, but even the non-poisonous ones still give me the heebies!
@ggsb--HAHA Yes, I do that too I just never know how to spell "vacuum" so I didn't include it in my post! HAHA. Also, I stopped using the V-A-C-U-U-M cleaner so much because once I left it on the porch and someone stole it! bug and alll....
@VirginiaMarie - well maybe the bug "got em" after they stole it ;)
Too many years of being on my own, and having had to work in a dorm full of high school girls, I am now the master at rescuing spiders and other critters, or dispatching them as necessary. I have rescued spiders, lizards, crickets, you name it. But now that hubby is in the picture, I totally get him to take care of stuff like that!

Who "dispatches" the spiders and roaches? You, your SO, both or neither?
Mr. Sew kills the bugs, while I scream my head off. I can't handle the eight-legged!
