I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time dress-shopping, and I am ready to just choose one, goshdarnit!
I just ordered a BHLDN gown – Isis (check it out here: http://www.bhldn.com/product/isis-gown). I got it last night. It is gorgeous, and I love the simplicity.
But I would need to wear Spanx.
This is a problem because I have interstitial cystitis, a bladder pain disorder. I’m hopped up on a lot of meds and am doing very well, but I know that my wedding day, because of the stress, might be a little ouchy (stress is a trigger). My concern is that if I am wearing Spanx, it would increase my pain levels more (tight clothing is also a trigger).
I am so bummed. I love slim, simple, elegant gowns. At first I wanted a ballgown, but I soon realized I feel like it becomes more about the dress than me in a ballgown. Now it seems I may have to go that route, because I will be most comfortable in one.
Sigh. I know its a first world problem, but man, I love that dress!

@Karenina: Awww, that sucks. I have tummy troubles so I can’t wear tight clothes either, I understand what you’re going through. On the other hand, you will be very active on your wedding day so comfort is super important anyway.

You can do an a line! It’s not too attention grabbing, and will still stay off your tummy

@Karenina: I am willing to bet that you will look AMAZING in the fitted dress of your dreams! If you want a fitted dress, go for it!

Don;t worry… Spanx don’t make THAT much of a difference! You do not want to be in pain on your wedding day!!

What about an empire waisted gown? 🙂

Who says you HAVE to wear Spanx? As fair as I’m aware, there’s no rule in the Bride’s Handbook thay says “Thou shalt wear Spanx”.
I say get the dress, be comfy and do whatever the f**k you want (within reason). Its your day and hopefully you will only have one wedding. Wear the dress you want to wear, shapewear be damned!

I totally agree with PPs that you don’t NEED Spanx.
However, for me, I found all fitted dresses to be soooo uncomfortable. I was so much comfier and happier when I popped on my smallish ballgown. So maybe try to think of it in terms of what will make you FEEL happiest, and then decide?
