Is your ring white gold? You can be allergic to gold or to the metal they mix with gold to make it harder. ever had a reaction to other gold jewelry?
Do you wear your engagement ring when you wash your hands? It could be soap trapped under the ring irritating your finger. That happened to my MOH - she finally figured out what it was so she now makes sure to rinse her hand really well and dry under her ring.
The same thing happened to my friend. She realized that she didnt clean her ring and that caused an infection. When was the last time you cleaned it?
Yes my ring is white gold. I have another ring that is white gold that I've never reacted to and I have a necklace that is white gold and never had a reaction...
Yes, I do wear my ring when I wash my hands... I'm scared to take it off and lose it!
I cleaned it about a week ago and I was getting the bump before and after I cleaned it :-\
Maybe u should try wearing it on another finger for a little while to see what happens...Maybe it just can't heal because the ring keeps irritating it and also make sure u dry under ur ring really good after u wash ur hands...
I have a little bump, but it's more on my knuckle. It's from my ring riding up juuuuust a bit.
I have a ring that makes me finger get like that - it's because after you wash your hands, theres a bit if wetness under the ring. The wetness and the friction of the ring on your finger causes the skin irritation. Just make sure you dry it off, and the bump should go away!
That happened to me too. I ended up going to get an allergy test done and found out that I was allergic to the nickel that was used in the 18k gold. We ended up having to get the ring remade to be 100% hypoallergenic. The other white gold jewelery you have might contain different concentrations of nickel in the metals. The lower the concentration, the less likely you are to have an allergic reaction.
I had the same thing... a tiny little bump right under the ring. Kinda looked like a pimple but it was super tiny. It went away after a month or so. My theory was that I just wasn't used to wearing a ring on that finger! Either that, or there is something in the white gold that irritated my skin.
So here's an update... Been wearing my ring since Oct 31st, 2009. After I wrote this post and got the answer of drying underneath it, I tried it. I thought it was working until a few days ago I noticed I was getting the same thing just BELOW my ring where the ring never really sits. So what the heck now?!? My FI keeps saying "did I get you a bad ring" so I feel bad! Next time I'm at the doctors, I'm going to ask but I don't really want to make a special trip for it... anymore suggestions?!
Does your ring fit rather tightly, and does it have a wider band? I had something very similar to this happen with a wide ring that I never took off (it was sterling silver.) Turns out it was from dampness getting trapped under the ring, not giving that spot on my finger an opportunity to "breathe." I stopped wearing it at night and the problem went away!
I get that from wearing one of my grandma's rings if I don't take it off when I was and, more importantly DRY, my hands. I am fairly sure that mine is caused by the moisture left after washing. Once I started taking it off when washing and making sure my hands were completely dry before putting it on, the bumps went away.
No the ring doesn't fit tight at all.
I wash my hands with it on, but when I dry them I take of the ring so I'm pretty sure it's not from the mosture. Especially now that I'm getting it below where I wear the ring instead of right under it...
This is the ring. The band isn't very wide.
Here is a trick my grandma taught me.
Always take your ring off when you wash your hands. But when you take it off, hold it between your lips, that way you won't forget you set it down, and you can wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
it could be an ingrown hair from the rubbing your ring does on your finger. those can look like little pimples. my stone is free underneath the setting and when i first started wearing my ring it would wear the teeny hairs off of my finger! i have no more hair where my ring sits. lol.
I have a cut on the inside of my pinky finger where it keeps hitting the side stone on my 3 stone ring.
Ouch!
It's definitley not an ingrown hair... It looks so gross when show someone my ring!
@ sunshine23
Are you still having this problem? I have the same issue you are having and am fearful it is a nickel allergy. I have never owned anything made with white gold before so I am at a loss. Problem is that mine becomes itchy after time.
@Saeliz
I am still having this issue. It comes and goes... its really strange. I asked the guy we bought the ring from and he said it's probably from moisture and that I should take my ring off when I wash my hands... well I have a problem doing that so I never do but you'd think the bump would never go away since it's always wet on and off every day. But the bump goes away for a couple weeks then I end up with a little bump that grows and looks gross!
I actually woke up with the bump this morning! I moved my ring to my right hand right away and so far it hasn't got worse. I took a pic this mornig with my iphone.
Have you tried drying under the ring every time you wash your hands?
You can see the bump in the picture and how my finger is also red... its usually got a bit of red daily :-s Usually the bump grows by the end of the day until its the whole width of my finger. So far so good today!

I haven't tried that yet but thanks for suggesting...I have an issue with taking it off too while at work at stuff. When I shower at home I take it off because I don't want it to get dirty with the soap but I think I will have to make an effort at work or something. Our bumps look EXACTLY the same! It's so odd! The worst part about it is that it itches like crazy sometimes. Our jeweler said it was most likely nickel and he cleaned it again and re-coated it in rhodium in case there was a spot that was missed. I was bump free for about a week and it came back :( I'll let you know how the drying part works out. Let me know if you find any fixes!
I used to get those bumps on my finger too. Do you take your ring off at night? I put my ring in its box every night. Also I totally agree with everyone to take your ring off when you wash your hands.
When considering allergies with white gold, be sure to keep in mind that gold can be alloyed with different things to make it white. At one time, nickel was very prevalent, and it does tend to cause allergic reactions in some people. Rhodium is also common, but I think people don't tend to have reactions to that as often. So, even hough you're not allergic to your other white gold jewelry, it could still be an allergy if they just happen to be alloyed with different materials in order to make the gold appear white.
i totally get the same thing!!!!! my ring is platinum, so its not a weird allergie. ive tried drying my hands, not wearing it when i shower, not wearing it when i excersize, etc. nothing helps. it drives me nuts!
Strange... I THINK mine has to do with moisture because I'm not consistent with taking it off. But I should start taking it off at night to see if that helps. After I wash my hands, I take my ring off (put it on another finger) and dry my hand as much as possible but I think the ring still wet and maybe has some soap on it?
My bump has pretty much gone away instead of get worse like normal. Next time I get it, I'll post more pictures.
My first go-round, my ring did the same thing. I think some manufacturers do use nickle, and I am horrifically allergic.
Mine 'bites' me sometimes under my diamond...there is a little 'hole' at the bottom of all the claws and every now and then I get a little skin scratch from that. My mark is maybe less raised than yours, but seems similar.
Update...I have started taking my ring off when I wash my hands and when I go to bed at night. If I end up sleeping with it I wake up with a tiny bump under where my ring sits. My concern is that when we get our wedding bands that I will have the same problem with the wedding band. I hate taking my e ring off all the time already because I am already afraid of losing it. I think I may make an appointment with a dermatologist and see what they think. Our jeweler has been kind enough to allow us to upgrade to platinum if we have to at a discount because of all this. I just don't want to upgrade to platinum without knowing first! I'll keep you posted :)
New update for me now!!
I've been taking my ring off at night when I sleep but NOT when I wash my hands and I havent had my bump in over a month. I'm really happy about that! Hope it keeps up!
I absolutely have the same thing. My ring is platinum and doesn't fit tight at all. The red bump doesn't hurt at all, but it's just THERE just below my knuckle. I've been engaged for over a year and it's there and hasn't changed. The only thing I could think of was that it was some sort of a reaction to the weight of the ring on our fingers.
I never had that problem, but my SIL did have a weird reaction when she was engaged. I don't remember her exact symptoms, but she thought it was a little weird and mentioned it to her Dr. at her next appointment and it turns out she had a blood clot in her finger! It wasn't caused by the ring, but something about wearing one everyday vs. not made it worse and noticable...she ended up needing surgery and now wears her rings on her right hand.

This is a weird post but I'm hoping someone knows what I'm talking about... ever since I've been wearing my engagement ring (since Halloween), I keep getting a bump under it. It comes and goes but it looks like a pimple (but its not). I don't know why I'm getting it and how to make it stop? It doesn't hurt but it looks kind of gross when someone wants to see my ring!
