I don't know much about how the bustle works....but I have a mermaid/trumped style, and we did a french bustle- it has 19 points!!!! I would just try to find pictures of your dress online (real weddings work best since they will photos of the dress bustled) and show it to your seamstress!
My dress is more of a trumpet, too. I'm getting a 3-point French Bustle (it hooks underneath rather than on top). You can see preliminary pictures of the bustle in my alterations post here (see the bottom two pictures). It's not quite the finished project because my dress is being taken in quite a bit, so the bustle looks more "poufy" than the final product. I'm doing my 2nd fitting on Saturday, and can post more pictures then.
Good luck!

Thanks ashlop2! My dress is kind of unique in that it's a mermaid sillohuette but has a corset back with a chapel train. I've tried to find similar dresses on theknot and other websites, but not quite the same.
And thank you so much for the pictures, Miss Toucan! I can wait to see the results at your second fitting!
lilneko69: My friend that got married in June had a mermaid style dress and her bustle was exactly how you described above: similar to the dress on the left of the picture you included, but lower and it looked beautiful. I think that's what I'm going to have to do with my dress too. When they showed it to me in the shop, I wasn't thrilled, but I think it looks good when it's all pulled together.

Hi girls,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience or pictures showing the bustle on a mermaid-shaped dress. My dress designer is recommending a 1 point over-bustle similar to the dress on the left but attached lower on the dress:

I'm not fond of the look, but I'm not sure how else it can be done.
Thanks for any insights you can provide!
