I had a really hard time getting motivated to exercise, so I bit the bullet and bought a gym membership and some gym clothes and everything. I went mostly to walk briskly/jog a teensy bit, because I’m in awful shape and can’t go a lot harder than that now.
It worked in one sense… every day I feel compelled to exercise because I spent the money.
But I’m not going to the gym now.
I’m walking outside!
Before I bought the gym membership, I wouldn’t walk outside for fitness if you paid me, just too lazy, but now I paid the money, and day after day I’m going “I don’t feel like going to the gym, I’ll just walk/jog outside for an hour instead.” Something I would never, ever have done before.
I paid for the gym… and it made me want to exercise outside. Am I a crazy backwards person?

No. I belong to our community gym, but more often than not, I’m in my home gym (read as: basement with weight bench, DVDs, & exercise bike) or out on the track, trying to run. I haven’t been in the mood to deal with other exercisers, and there is something nice about being by my lonesome, and getting in the zone without worrying whether I’m too sweaty, too smelly, too loud when I’m lifting weights, or too unfit compared to the other gym goers. As long as you’re moving more, you should be proud of yourself.
Why not head over to myfitnesspal.com and get some additional inspiration / support?

@Bebealways: That’s brilliant that you’re exercising outdoors. It’s often preferable at this time of year when days are getting longer/nicer.
Howabout you go into the gym and get them to do a program for you, or hire a personal trainer to show you? I used to wander aimlessly around the gym. Whereas now I really make use ofTNT time and get in and out as quickly as possibly. I’m working on strength, endurance and toning now. It’s definitely worth talking to someone in tgym my about your needs. Then you can structure you time eg gym twice a week and outdoors twice, focusing on different things in each exercise

@Bebealways: Don’t know where you live, but it’s beautiful outside around here. I’ve noticed that the gym has gotten a lot less crowded so a lot of other people are doing that too. I went to the gym yesterday but plan on going to the park with my dog this evening instead.

@Bebealways: It doesn’t matter what made you start moving… just that you have!!! I think it’s great!!! I use loseit.com instead of my fitness pal. I just like it better. But great suggestion to use either!

@Bebealways: I do the same thing during the spring/summer months! I’d much rather be out in the fresh air than at the gym. I’m lucky @ my gym we can freeze our membership once a year for up to 3 months.. so June, Jul and Aug I freeze my membership (you still pay $5 a month to keep your membership active, but it’s less than the usual monthly payments).
I don’t think you’re weird at all though.. I think anyone would rather be outside than in a gym breathing in everyone sweat lol

No. I dreeeeeead running on the treadmill. I would rather be outside, also. It probably just took that kick in the butt for you to get in a fitness routine to realize that. Plus, with the weather turning nicer, I think it’s normal to feel like the day is being wasted inside at the gym. It doesn’t matter where you’re moving, just as long as you’re moving. Stick with it, girl!
