This is totally something to discuss with your provider before you go in! All surgery carries risks, and they have to explain all those risks, even if it has only happened on one of several thousand patients. The hospital has TED hose and SED boots but I don't think I have every seen someone recovering froma C-Section wearing them. It is a fairly routine surgery and the doctor doing yours will have done many of them but it is still major surgery. I wouldn't stress and freak out too much about it, and talk to your provider, address these concerns specifically, they will be the best place to get information. And if the actual doctor isn't much help (because lets face it, they are freqently incredibly busy and not always known for being the best at soothing fears) don't let that stop you. Talk to the nurse, they know what they are talking about too.
I have had 3 c-sections, and I only ha the compression boots 1 time. I was also very swollen, so maybe that had something to do with it? If I could give some advice, it would be to set up some help after you are home. I found it difficut to do things around the house, and having somebody to help with household chores is a must. I hd infections with all three though, so that made my recovery slower. C-sections are not fun...but I always make myself feel better about it because in the end, I get a super cute baby. Good Luck!
They worry about blood clots with any surgery because you aren't moving around much afterwards. They tried to put them on me at the hospital - they may have had them on me during the c-section but I couldn't feel it, but I refused once I had feeling back in my legs. I had to cry to get the nurse to leave me alone about them. They are incredibly uncomfortable. Not painful but super annoying and itchy.
@bells: Any procedure with anesthesia can cause them, as well as being bed ridden after a surgery. That is why they get you up and walking ASAP after surgery.
I think you should talk to your doctor about your worries. My understanding is that certain people/groups are more at risk for complications like blood clots than others, and your risk depends a lot on your overall health. Also, your doctor should be able to recommend whether or not you need to wear compression boots during the surgery and arrange for them if you need it.
We all freak out when it starts getting close. :) Talking to your doctor can relieve a lot of your worries, though, and will inform you of your individual risks. Good luck!

I had a cesarean with DS and they didn't do the compression boots on me. It wasn't until afterward though that I found out the risks involved.
Take in a list of questions next time you go in and don't let your doctor leave until they're all answered and you have the full understanding.... b/c there's nothing worse then asking a question and then leaving more confused then you started. lol

@ams12: Did you OB tell you that you would definitely need to have a C-section? if you discuss with your doctor you might be able to avoid a c-section altogether
They were standard procedure at my hospital. If I took them off and my proivder came in they strongly reccomended that if I was going to be in bed for longer than an hour that I need to put them back on. I even slept with them on. They didn't bother me, but I know some friends that have said they hated them, others say they love them. They put them on prior to surgery, and they remained in my room for the rest of my stay.
I would however, strongly advise you to get out and go for walks as much as possibly. I was walking around the unit about 3-4 times per day. I started my first walk about 11 hours after surgery. The first one I took with the tech for support, all the rest were my husband, myself, and our DD. It's good to get up an move, just don't overdo it.
thanks ladies for the advice! I am going to talk to him next week when I see him about all my concerns. My dr has been pretty open from the start and it's been pretty known that I would most likley need a c-section due to a condition I have, it just never occured to me to address blood clots as I didn't know the increased risk, now that I do I am def going to talk to him about it.
Talk to your doc, but these worries are normal. I wore those inflatablecompression leg things during and after my surgery. The hospital provided them for me. I actually really liked them,it was like a massage =o) Definitely walk as much as you can, it helps recovery a ton and keeps the blood flowing. Like another poster said, all surgeries and being bed ridden carry the risk of blood clots.

Hi all,
I am starting to become a worry wort and freak myself out. I am 35 weeks, and most likely will be needing a C section. I have started to freak myelf out about blood clots, in the legs and lungs, I didn't realize that C-Sections carried such a high risk.
I read an artricle that was posted in Aug of this year about how new recommendations are to wear inflatable compression boots during the surgery. Just wondering for those who had C-Sections if you wore this, and is if it's something I have to buy or request from the hospital?
Anyone else worry about blood clots in their legs from C-Sections? I am stressing myself out :(
