I'm on week 3, and I'm not a runner....at all. But, after getting into it I'm really enjoying it. It's hard at times, but by the end of a run I usually feel great! I haven't been consistent with it, but I need to start doing it more regularly. Good luck, Mrs. DG!
@Mrs. DG: I tried to start it about a month ago, but the heat wave here was just too hot to handle. I'm planning to start back up not that the weather is more moderate. I only did day one and I almost died. Not a good idea to start running on a 95+ degree day and forget your water bottle.
Ooh zippy, bad!
It was 82 this am (around 8) when we went. Too hot already! We made it though, and it wasn't bad. I hope I can stick with it!
i just recently finished the program!
i posted here when i started the program and got a TON of great advice..here is the thread: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/starting-couch-to-5k-tomorrowany-tips
most important tip IMHO: buy good shoes!
i dropped $100 on a pair of shoes going into the third week (i think?) and it made a lot of difference for my ankles.
i over-did it one week and had to take a week off (between week 8 & 9) because my knees were KILLING me..but i rested, and jumped back on the treadmill (its 100 degrees in texas, i run inside) and recently finished the program.
I started it early summer and got to week 6 and then life happened....Grandma fell, got sick and passed, the terrible heat and humidity and then family visits; so it got pushed aside.
I am planning on starting again next week but I had already signed up for 2 5ks in October and now feel I will not be ready but this has been 1 of my 2 major goals this year (getting pregnant is the other) so yes I would like to start and finish this this year! I really loved it and it helped get me back into gear after not working out for awhile. Good luck everyone!
I can tell that I haven't fully committed since I haven't signed up for my race yet ;)
I should do that tomorrow!
You are committed! I only signed up for a race bc if I did not have a set goal in mind at the end, it is easier for me to give up. But it does get you more excited if it is something you really want to do!
This is my THIRD attempt of C25K, but my first time carrying it all the way through. I'm going to finish week 7 today.
I know the difference this time is that I'm doing it outside, and I change up my location. Sometimes I run in my neighborhood. Other times I try new paths around my city. Occassionally I'll bring my dog. It really helps me to have something new to look forward to each run.
I'm in the process of completing it. I made it to week 7 and hurt my knee doing something non-C25K related. It was stupid. So, I took a few weeks off from that, So, last week I did a rewind to week 5. It was awesome. I did well. This weekend ragweed has kicked my butt so I think I'm going to have to bring this workout indoors for awhile. I'm a runny-noss, watery eyes mess. It's not pretty.
I'm not good at running on the treadmill for a long period of time. Any suggestions?
i was doing C25K and was in the middle of week 4. then i i got strep throat, which made me not want to leave my house, let alone go running. i'm starting up my gym time again tonight and i'm excited about it. i might have to go back a week or so, just to get back in the swing of things, but it's a really good program!
I'm in Week 6 of C25K! And I've found that I'm more hindered by the mental challenge than the physical. So ignore the voices in your head, and stick to the plan. It's preparing you well for what's to come!
Ok! You all are motivating me. We're in Week 2. 90 second runs and 2 minute walks. I'm route choosing better because I keep picking really hilly areas to end on and that makes me not want to do it. I had to do an extra day of Week 1 to keep going, otherwise I wouldn't have gone at the beginning of this week.
Also, I *think* running with the stroller is giving me a better workout!
Keep going, girls!
I just discovered this thread because another Bee over in "waiting" mentioned C25K. I'm also on Week 2 (D2)!!! I am doing more like 4 times a week instead of 3. But if I need to repeat a day, I definitely willl do that.
I'm in pretty good shape, I've just always *hated* running. I'd say I ran about once a year when I was desperate for a workout and out of town with friends who are runners. I kept up OK and I got a good workout, but I never enjoyed it and my legs were all messed up for days afterwards. Then I wouldn't run again for another year, LOL! This program is inspiring to me becuase I want to give myself a chance to enjoy running.
I'm starting Week 4 Day 1 and it's hard. I know to many it doesn't seem like much but to run for 5 min kills me. It's not that I'm tired or anything but my shins are KILLING ME. Does anyone else have a problem with their shins killing them? Remedies? I would love some tips please!!
@Soon2beeMrsM: You may have shin splints.
In terms of treatment: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation.
In terms of prevention...are you wearing good shoes? Real running shoes? You may need extra arch support.
They can also be prevented with some strength training. Try toe raises. Stand up, slowly rise up on your toes, then slowly lower your heels to the floor. Repeat that about 10 times.
I hope you start to feel better!
Go back to week 3 and repeat it if you need to! No one likes to be in pain...give your body a chance to adjust.
Hey...does anyone have any suggestions/tips for running outside? I can run like no tomorrow on a treadmill but get me outside and it is like I am having an asthma attack! :) I now live 30 minutes from my gym and we now have equipment in the basement so it would logical to cancel that membership and save the mula, plus I live out in the beautiful country and would like to run at anytime I please. Help? I slow down but I just can't seem to follow through the way I can on the treadmill.
I had just finished W2D2 when my knees went WACKO! This was a couple months ago when I started, and I'm very overweight (70lbs), and I was the epitome of a couch potato, meaning zero physical activity. The most excruciating pain ever in both knees, they were so tight, swollen, stiff, and kept popping constantly. It took a good 3 weeks for them to get back to normal. I think it's because I overpronate and I didn't have the proper shoes, but I can't really afford $150 or so to get some supportive shoes right now. And the memory of that pain scares the crap out of me, but one of these days I want to start up again, properly. Plus it didn't help that I was running on an outdoor track in the heat of summer in Georgia, lol.
I have never heard of this program before until I saw this post and looked it up, I think I am totally going to try! Thanks!
@MissGreen: Good for you! I can't run on a treadmill to save my life...I'm the oppositve of you. I like running outside. See if you can discipline yourself to do it for a few weeks before cancelling the gym membership though. Maybe start at week 1 and make it as easy and fun for yourself as possible.
I downloaded the iPhone app and listen to my music or motivational talks during my run. Do you have this? It's great because it keep track of your workouts, and it's only 2 or 3 bucks.
One thing I am doing to make it interesting for me is trying different routes/neighborhoods every day. Including doing C25K in different towns during this past holiday weekend, and on work trips. Then I put it in my "notes" section where I went running. So far I've been in 4 different counties, in 2 states! And I'm only on W3D3.
Good luck :-)
I have had a ton of allergy-induced excuses to not run, but I love the Chubby Jones C25K podcasts. She cracks me up.
I'm in week 4. I wish I had seen this thread earlier. We should keep this thread going to support each other. My husband and I are doing this program together. I have a blog here where I write about our journey in the program. Anyone else blogging about their C25K experience? I'd love to follow other blogs! Oh and I'm giving away some business cards on that blog, should anyone need them for wedding-related projects!
I just started last week though I started on week 3 since I'm not a complete newbie. I'm actually athletic but hate running. Anyway, now I'm on Week 4 Day 3 and it's awesome =) I definitely downloaded the c25k app on my phone, and also downloaded Pandora. I put some pitbull song on Pandora, and then I got really great bootie/uptempo music to listen to while I run w/o making a playlist or actually downloading songs! Also got a suggestion to get a book on an mp3 which I thought was a great idea.
Good luck!
Yes! Let's definitely support each other, fellow C25Kers....I'm starting classes again now so it will be a challenge to keep on track with the program. I did 2 days of week 3 over the Labor Day weekend. Need to finish week 3 tomorrow before the next weekend comes.
Good luck Bees!
Ladies! Today was day 3 of week one... Although I have been doing it without a resting day. Today I pushed myself harder, and found already it is getting easier for me... I am really positive and motivated! Good luck to you all! I think I may do another couple days of week 1 before I push it to hard :)
@Miss Mitzie: Good for you! I really enjoyed week 1. I think it's a great idea to do as many days of each week as you need to, so you can be comfortable and let your body adjust.

I started c25k on Monday. So far so good, but it's not in my nature to hold back (short intervals). Anyone else doing C25K right now? Any words of wisdom from those who have been doing it longer?
Any new runners who are starting around now too?
I'm surprised I'm a little sore today, but my neighborhood is pretty hilly and I went from sea level to 4000 ft in elevation recently with my move.
