So, I just had a meeting and tasting with a cake baker last week. Overall I wasn’t super impressed, although the price was fantastic. I guess I’m just not that into cake! I was toying with the idea of some type of dessert bar, or having Rita’s Italian Ice catered. I also saw that Maggie Moos catered and thought it would be kind of cute to have them cater an ice cream bar or something. What would you think if you were a guest and there was no wedding cake? Would you think it was weird?

I would be totally fine with that. After all, who says you HAVE to have a cake? The only thing you have to have is something you’re happy with. And if that’s an ice cream bar then that’s great!

Maggie Moos has Birthday Cake ice cream–just title it Wedding Cake ice cream =]
Frankly i’m sorta over wedding cake. it’s never that good. It’s never going to be as good as ice cream is =]

Hmmmm…intriguing. Here’s a suggestion from a fellow b2b who feels “meh” about cake too: Have some “wedding cupcakes” made (maybe 1/2 of the # of people you invite), or have them as part of a dessert bar. FH and I are toying with a gourmet coffee bar and a (very) small chocolate wedding-ish cake with chocolate frosting. We love the idea of a dessert bar, too.
On a side note, the absolute MOST MEMORABLE wedding I attended did not include cake at all. Instead, peach cobbler and ice cream were served. It was so yummy.

My FI’s grandmother threw us our engagement party and she looooves throwing big parties so with a super fun dessert bar there was a cold stone ice cream bar, waffle cones made on site, a few flavors the whole deal. It was a TOTAL hit! Only thing is my FI used to work for Maggie Moo’s so he always hates Cold stone, ha.
My sister was also telling me of her friend’s wedding where they did a small cake to cutt and then little pints of ben & jerry’s b/c the couple eats it all the time. I thought that was super personal. If cake’s not your style, don’t do it! We’re doing a cake buffet with cakes, pies and cheesecakes b/c I didn’t want to settle for 1 big cake!

My college roommate got married last summer, and they had a gelato bar instead of cake. I didn’t think it was weird…I thought it was really cool! Instead of cutting the cake, they exchanged spoonfuls of gelato. So fun!

My friend went to a wedding where an ice cream truck pulled up to the (kind of fancy) venue at dessert time. Everyone LOVED it!
We’re not into cake much either, so we’ve been toying with doing an assortment of pies or a gelato bar.
A friend used cake, but did something kinda cool–she had single cakes (all in different flavors) and had one placed on each table. Guests were encouraged to cut a slice either from the cake on their table, or get up and wander around to try the cakes at the other tables. It was fun!

We’re thinking of skipping the cake too. The catered meal includes dessert and cake is so expensive. But our liquor lisence requires us to put food out later in the evening so our venue suggested dupcakes. The other day I was thinking about pastries – maybe even an assortment of Italian desserts? (cannolis!!) My FH is Italian so I thought it might be neat. I wouldn’t think it was strange at all not to have a cake!

I’m not doing cake. For one, it is too expensive. Second, I am only having 16 at my wedding and dont need a big cake, and lastly, I had a wedding planner/caterer tell me that a large majority of wedding cakes end up right in the trash! I think unles you just have to have the cake cutting ceremony, it is a waste.
I am having a choice of two different desserts. One is a chocolate/strawberry bomb and the other I haven’t chosen yet. The chocolate bom is TO DIE FOR and I doubt anyone who chooses it will be missing out on anything!

@ejs4y8: I agree. I don’t think wedding cake is really that good. For that matter, I never really like birthday cake either.
I talked to my fi about it. He kind of thinks he wants to have a cake so we can cut it together. Maybe a small cake just to cut and some other stuff?

I would love to attend a wedding that had an ice cream bar in lieu of wedding cake. You can create your own signature mix and call it your wedding ice cream cake. Oh man! I need to look into Maggie Moos…haha!

I was married this past May, I had a wedding cake but instead of a grooms cake we had an ice cream bar and candy bar…. everyone loved it!

@mhayward: Did you DIY your ice cream bar, or did you have your caterer set it up? Was it expensive?

The lady that I had do our candy bar also did the ice cream bar and we had an attendant wear an apron and white paper hat….WE had a seperate candy bar on the other side of the ice cream sundae bar… It was a BIG hit.. I am adding a picture of both… And honestly no it wasnt that expensive at all ! But then again my vendor rocked so I think she kind of hooked us up???? Where are you located??

My FI and I dont do cake, like ever. We will be having a pie bar at our home reception with different types of pies!
