We're going with James Kennedy from Confections. He's not technically in RI, but he's in Fall River, which is sort of like fake RI. We looooooved him, he is a total sweetheart and we nearly died when we tasted the chocolate and lemon-raspberry cakes he had us taste (and I normally am not such a fan of lemon-raspberry). He'll do whatever you want--the cakes on his website look a little fussy for my taste, so I wasn't sure at first, but he'll totally do plain and simple if you ask it of him. The price he quoted, for a cake with a little bit of decoration and a fondant cover, was more than I wanted to spend but still much, much less than many of the other bakers we looked at in the area.
Here's his website with his contact info (no e-mail, FYI--he's an old-fashioned phone guy): http://www.kennedyconfections.com/
Thanks so much, Do you know what his starting price is per slice?
I actually don't know what his starting price is per slice--he didn't give us an info sheet or anything. But he quoted us $645 for a cake for 150 guests with decoration (if you got a plain plain cake I think it would be less), so that works out to be about $4.30/slice. This was for alternating tiers of chocoalte ganache cake with grand marnier and vanilla buttercream and lemon cake with lemon syrup and raspberry filling and vanilla buttercream.
We're using The Bakery Boutique in Smithfield (www.pinkandbrownbakery.com). Deana has been awesome, and the cakes are amazing!
We're using Sin Desserts for a chocolate bourbon cake for 150 people. It's $550 - they've been great to work with, I can't say enough great things (and everything I've heard about their cakes is fantastic)
After five tastings, we found a baker! We are actually going with Konditor Mesiter in Braintree, MA. They currently start at $3.00 a slice for a basic design and although they have a delivery fee to Newport, it ended up costing less than any of the RI bakers we looked at. My sister used them for her wedding, and they are delicious. We wanted someone clsoer to save on costs, but they ended up being the best deal! Thanks for all of your suggesstions!
In Newport, I would highly recommend Fatouli's Bakery (located next to Newport Vineyards). I know you already booked but I had not seen this before. Prices start at $3.50 I believe and there is no delivery fee on the Island. We also did about 5 tastings and loved their cake. I've heard only good things about Konditor Meister, we just didn't try them based on location.

Does anyone know of a good cake baker in RI? I'm hoping to do a simple cake, looking for someone who is reasonably priced. Thanks!
