Can you go to the bakery and explain your concerns? The should have an answer. If you aren't comfortable with their answer, you can keep looking. Also, if they seem upset that you checked them out, you'll know to go elsewhere.
i think maisymay have a great point. go and ask them about what you found and if they get mad then find another person.
but to be honest if i were you i will find another bakery right away, cake is something you dont want to worry about the day of your wedding.
Ok, so I called this cake baker today and here's what he said. A while ago they had a girl who was on Bridezillas come in and put down a deposit, sign a contract, etc. She didn't specify a cake design when she put down her deposit - she said she'd handle it later. When later came, she decided that she wanted a 'mad hatter' topsy turvey style cake - the cake baker said I'm sorry, our cake is too soft for that and it won't survive for your wedding day. She threw a fit, said she didn't care and she wanted it anyways. They said hey, we really can't do this, we're sorry. They gave her the non-refundable deposit back and appologized profusely but she still wasn't happy and reported them to the BBB. He said that when the BBB sent him letters, he sent them the email chain between the baker and this girl and hoped it would straighten things out. The BBB said the baker never responded to their inquiries. Hm. I googled the bakery's name and 'bridezillas' but couldn't find anything.
... any thoughts?
Thanks,
Bella
Um I think they are lying. That story seems a little far fetched to me. I would just go w/ a bakery that has a good BBB report, and not be worried about anything. You will find someone great to work with you might just have to look around a bit.
Wow, I don't know. I mean, if I were a business owner, I would want to story to reflect positively on me and my business. But they could be telling the truth. Check out www.weddingwire.com
You can check out vendors and review there from your geographic location.
I would have a lot of concerns about using their services. If you really want to consider using them, perhaps see if they will give you a list of wedding clients they have had in the past year and see if you can personally contact any of them to find out how their experience was.
Yeah I have to say that the story sounded a bit fishy. I am calling around to some other cake bakers to see what I can find. Part of the concern with this baker is they are super close to our after party location and we will have to transport the cake to the after party the morning of (barely anybody does delivery for less than 100 servings). Thanks for the feedback ladies - I just wanted to make sure I'm not making a mountain out of a molehill.

Hi Ladies (and Mr. Bee!),
Ok, so as the title suggests I have a cake problem or rather a problem with a cake vendor. So we went and tasted cakes a week or so ago and fell in love with a design in their cakery as well as their cake. The issue is, I have started checking out all of our vendors before we put a deposit down / book them and these guys have an "F" BBB rating due to "contract disputes." It says nothing more than that - just contract disputes. I'm not really sure how to handle this - when I asked them for a contract before putting down our deposit, they gave me just the cake sheet they use to write down what we asked for - no real 'agreement' or contract. Even then, they only gave this to me after I asked for it. Thoughts? Another bakery I talked to who had a great BBB rating is already booked enough that we could get our cake from them but would have to pick up the day before and find somewhere to keep it until the actual wedding day. I'm not really sure what to do here.
Thoughts???
Thanks,
Bella
