So, as we’re both Beatles fans, we REALLY wanted to use “When I’m Sixty-Four” as our cake-cutting song.
Why can’t we, you ask? Because my niece and her husband used it as theirs when they wed in late July. FH is especially bummed that we can’t use it. They’re not even Beatles fans.
I just think it would be in bad form if we use it, too. I asked one of my matrons her opinion on the subject, and she said “It’s not like they own the rights to the song — use it if you want to use it.”
What do you all think?

I would just use the song if its important to you and your Fiance. I don’t think anyone will notice it’s the same song.

@AlwaysSunny: FH and his mother are dancing to “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts (her choice — not his, as he HATES country music), and my niece’s husband and his mom danced to the same song.
So for that reason, we’re skeptical about using two of the same songs they did!

I don’t remember a single “significant” song to any wedding I’ve ever been to. Use the songs you love!
If you think you’re being impolite, maybe you can give your niece a heads up, but I don’t see why she could care enough to say you can’t.

It’s just a cake-cutting song… I bet no one would even notice! Just use it !

If you’re worried about using both songs, why not ask Future Mother-In-Law if she has any other ideas.

I didn’t even know that people had cake cutting songs! Quite honestly, most of your guests will be watching the cake cutting, not listening to the music so I’d go with your original choice. By October (if that is your wedding date) nobody is going to remember what they heard in July. Especially if it was only played while the cake was cut.

Use it. It’s a VERY popular cake cutting song.

No one will remember that it was used at a nother family member’s wedding. All of this stuff is so overused anyway. Don’t worry about it.

@leenh78: Use it. Its only your niece 😉

I didn’t even know there was such a thing as a cake cutting song. Been to many many weddings and couldn’t name the song played at cake cutting for any of them. Inclding my sisters that was just in July. So use your song. Nobody will notice or care. It’ll be fine.

So, FH is opposed to using the song, thinking it would be in bad form. Case closed.
We’re going with “One Way or Another” by Blondie, which will be a fun song. Plus I love New Wave, so there ya go!

@leenh78: Use it. I would be surprised if anybody remembers what song played when they cut the cake. Besides, do you know how many brides cut the cake to “How Sweet it is to be loved by you”? Like a million. Do the song you want.
